I just recently got an upgrade offer from Cingular to upgrade to a new
GSM phone and plan. I currently have a GAIT phone and have a plan
with 350 anytime minutes and the 5000 N/W minutes. The two phones
they are offering in this upgrade offer are the LG C1300 or the
Motorola V220. Of course, I would have to sign a new 2 year
comittment offer and my current committment ends later this year. My
main concern is whether the GSM coverage is pretty good in the
Northwest Arkansas region (or for that matter, Arkansas overall).
I haven't researched it in a while, but how is GSM coming along in the
United States? If I were to go with this plan and I was traveling to
different areas of the U.S., where could I expect to not have service?
As far as phones go, which one of the above phones would be the best
to go with, if I chose this upgrade offer?
Thanks for any input on this.

GSM coverage in the US is very good. As a matter of fact, if you get a
nation plan, you roam for free on all GSM networks.

From reading on HoFo, the LG GSM phones tend to subpar. I would say the
v220, but I have no hands on with an LG. Just my 2 cents.

Don't worry about it. Just keep your GAIT phone for a backup and put your
current SIM in the GSM phone. Make sure Cingular sends you a phone without
a SIM. I've been doing that with a T 62 U and a GSM only phone without
difficulty. If you don't get a GSM signal, put the SIM in your GAIT phone
and use it.

GSM coverage is great in Arkansas, I traveled in NW AR last summer and had
no problems whatso ever along the main routes on "the hill". traveled from
west to east back to US 167 and south to I40. Cingular GSM probably has the
best coverage in AR. I live 40 miles E of LR, good coverage here also.
Stay with Motorola !!

Re: GSM Coverage in Northwest Arkansas
I know I asked about Arkansas coverage, however, how is GSM coverage
in the U.S. overall?
Also, Cingular will really let you order the phone without a SIM?
Also, are the SIM sockets compatible between the GAIT phones and the
GSM phones? What about brands? I already ordered the phone, which is
a Motorola V220 and my Gait phone was a Nokia 6340i. Would they still
be compatible? If I wanted to use the SIM from my old phone, would I
have any problems getting Cingular to reactivate the GAIT SIM (and
deactivate the GSM only SIM) it so that I could do this? I know that
I have a time period of 30 days or so in order to try the service out
and switching back to GAIT service if I am not satisfied with the GSM
service
I've been reading a few websites from users who have commented on
Cingular's GSM service and the overall opinion I have gathered was
that it would be better off sticking with the GAIT phone since it
covers both basis.
