Computer glitch affects Cingular service

BOSTON (AP) _ A number of Cingular wireless phone customers in three states
experienced interruptions in service Wednesday evening due to a computer
failure, the company said.

Cingular spokesman Martin A. Nee said a computer that handles call routing
failed at about 5:17 p.m., affecting customers in Massachusetts, Connecticut
and upstate New York. The company switched affected traffic to another
computer, and that caused some call congestion, Nee said.

Nee said some customers reported intermittent problems placing and receiving
calls, while others experienced no loss of service. He did not have an
estimate on how many customers were affected.

Service was fully restored at about 8:45 p.m., Nee said.
