Anybody here use Connection Manager

Ok, Cingular Tech Support was no help...

Anybody here use Connection Manager?

I'm getting serious hangs when I use it and want to knock some ideas around.

Nah... found it easier to just set up the normal dial-up networking in
WinXP. One less program to screw up my system :-)

Directions for doing this have been posted on usenet various times.

Actually, That's kind of what I'm doing right now. But, what I have heard
is that doing it via WinXP causes the system to use GPRS instead of EDGE.
1/2 the speed, the whole nine yards.

What I have discovered is that it screws up Norton AV big time, so much so
that Outlook refuses to download anything, and it screws up my local copy of
IIS. I can't develop any more VStudio web pages....

This mirrors my brief experience with Connection Manager, too: Norton
Antivirus was holding up incoming e-mail. The only way I could receive
e-mail with any of several POP3 clients was to disable antivirus
scanning of incoming mail; then the clients behaved correctly.

Upon uninstallation of Connection Manager, Norton Antivirus is again
behaving correctly.

Do me a favor and report it to tech support. They didn't believe me when I
told them I was having problems.

They kept saying "It must be something on your machine, you'll have to
contact Microsoft."

Yea, right, sure.

I *think* it has to do with the compression protocols for EDGE.

So, the more people that complain to them about it then maybe they might
realise they have a problem....

I just upgraded from Cingular Connection Manager version 3.0.71.0 to
version 4.2.7.1. The older version worked fine with Norton Antivirus
2005, but the newer version prevents downloading of e-mail unless you
uncheck "Scan incoming EMail" in Norton Antivirus. Sony Ericsson also
has a Wireless Manager version 3.3.1.1518 that you can download from
the Sony Ericsson website that works with Cingular's EDGE/GPRS service.
The Sony Ericsson Wireless Manager works fine with Norton. Each of
the above 3 clients have their advantages. The newest version of
Cingular Connection Manager allows you to prevent image compression for
viewing images on websites at highest quality. With the other two
managers, you have to load the web page first, the reload the page
holding the shift key down to see the image at high quality. BTW I am
using Netscape Mail version 7.2 and am having the same issues with
Norton AV.

That's kind of what I thought. I love how tech support told me it was my
problem but now that it seems others are having the same issue.....

I'll check out Sony's manager and see if it helps me at all.

After installing the software, use the Connection Wizard to set up your
connection. I set up 2 connections on mine. I am not an expert, but the
choices I made below seem to work best for me.
1) On the first page enter the connection name. On the first connection
I used EDGE-GPRS Accelerated. Note the name field will not accept a /.
2) On the second page on the drop down menu under "Choose Network"
highlight Cingular, then click "Next".
3) On the third page, click "Advanced", then the "Compression" tab, and
check both boxes, then click "OK"
4) Click "Next", "Next", and "Finish
5) I ran the Connection Wizard a second time and used EDGE-GPRS
Non-Accelerated in the name field, and did not check the boxes as above
for compression.
6) Under "File" on the menu of the Wireless Manager I clicked
preferences and on the Radio Power tab chose to have the Turn Radio On
button selected and the Reset card on shutdown button selected. On the
GPRS tab I checked the box to Establish GPRS Connection on startup, and
I chose EDGE-GPRS Accelerated for my connection in the pulldown menu.

I have been able to have both the Sony Ericsson Wireless Manager and
the Cingular Connection Manager 4.2.7.1 installed on my system at the
same time, but just having Cingular Connection Manager 4.2.7.1
installed on my system caused the e-mail problem with Norton AV to
persist, even though I was using the Sony Ericsson Wireless Manager for
my connection.

I did e-mail Cingular regarding the conflict between Cingular
Connection Manager 4.2.7.1 and Norton Antivirus 2005. Their Customer
Support Dept. replied that they would "bring this issue to the
attention of the appropriate department".

Correction:
I stated in a previous post: "The newest version of Cingular Connection
Manager allows you to prevent image compression for viewing images on
websites at highest quality. With the other two managers, you have to
load the web page first, the reload the page holding the shift key down
to see the image at high quality."

Actually, with the older version (and newer version) of Cingular
Connection Manager, if you choose EDGE/GPRS Non-Accelerated for your
connection, you will be downloading web page images at high quality.

I now have both the older version of Cingular Connection Manager
3.0.71.0 and Sony Ericsson Wireless Manager version 3.3.1.1518
installed on my laptop. I can download e-mail with Norton Antivirus
2005 set to "Scan incoming EMail", with either wireless manager
running. I like leaving the Sony Ericsson Manager installed mainly
because you can use it to reset the card upon closing the program. I've
found that with Cingular's software, the card often hangs when I lose
my connection, and the only way to reestablish it is by removing and
reinserting the PC card, or by rebooting. With the Sony Ericsson
manager installed, I can start it, then close it to reset the card.
Then if I want to, I can run Cingular Connection Manager again (I like
viewing web page images at full resolution).

Found a solution with the original Connection Manager.

If you download the "Version for current cingular users..." it's version
4.2.7.1...

But, if you click on "Former ATT customers..." It's version 4.2.11.0
A.K.A. a newer version.

I checked it with both NAV (I can receive without disabling NAV).... Also,
Visual Studio works just fine debugging local web pages...

After two days of phone calls and everyone telling me it wasn't their
fault, I got hold of a tech who checked this site and decided to dump
the software that came from Cingular and to use the Ericsson software.
It has worked like a charm ever since!

Cingular software caused havic on my email/anti-virus software!
