    Hello:

I recently moved and in the new neighborhood my old Siemens S56 (
    simialr to http://www.mobiledia.com/reviews/siemens/s55/page1.html )has
difficulty connecting to the network. I usually get a maximum of two
"chevron" marks, and it is not very uncommon to see a single one.

I wonder if getting a newer phone with an external antenna, such as a
    Motorola v265 (
    http://www.mobiledia.com/reviews/mot...265/page1.html ), would
    improve the reception?

    Thanks!

Your Siemens S56 is a GSM phone, and the Motorola v265 is a CDMA phone.
These are two different technologies for use with different carriers.
The v265 is only for Verizon Wireless unless you can get an unlocked
version, in which case you may be able to use it with Sprint (if they
will activate it). However, the v265 will never work with Cingular.
Although I personally haven't checked it out, I've been reading on
these forums that none of the newer GSM phones have an external antenna.

Thanks. I guess I have to change carriers then. The reason I brought up
Motorola v265 was that a friend who visited me is using one. He had
very good reception where I live.

I checked into switching over to Verizon some weeks ago also.
Unfortunately to get a decent phone at a decent discount I have to sign
    up for two years.

Not necessarily. If your carrier also uses GSM, you can just renew
your contract but for GSM service.
