walkie talkie type service

rumor has it that Cingular will soon release a 'push to talk' service
like other companies. Is this true and when is it suppose to be
available???

I haven't heard any thing at all that would substantiate your rumor above.

As far as I know this is not on the burner for Cingular.

I would suggest that if you need walkie talkie service that you sign-up with
Nextel. They have good walkie talkie service.

There is an internal trial system they're using for R&D. As to whether
it'll ever rise to a public service offering is another kettle of fish.

Not to mention that while Nextel's PPT feature is wonderful, their
cellular coverage leaves quite a bit to be desired.

I've heard rumors that they are in the testing phases. Who's structure,
whether kodiak, fastmobile or who's I don't know. I'd be more surprised if
they didn't do something with ptt, even t-mo in europe i've heard is doing
something with it. That's all I've heard.

Yes they are in the testing phase right now with several areas. I know
that DC and Phila are 2 areas that they are testing and I've seen the
feature loaded into the computer system. However there has NOT been
any formal mentioning as to when this will launch and what phones will
be supported. I've heard that Nokia will have a phone at the launch of
the service as well as LG but I do not know the model numbers. Also
there may be a software upgrade available to make the V551 and V3
available to do PTT. Again all rumor and nothing fact at this point.
Possible launch in 4th Quarter of this year but just speculation!

Of course, they are a walkie talkie company. I certainly would expect a
walkie talkie company to have good service. They are not a cellular/PCS
carrier.

That's really a moot point though because they effectively provide the
same service (although in my experience Nextel is not as robust for
phone calls). Zero difference from the perspective of the user.

I doubt that current phones will be upgraded. My guess is that the PTT
service will be rolled out with new phones like the Motorola V360.

Scheduled for roll-out September 1... at least in Chicago. LG F7200 with
PTT, a slider with GPRS Class 10 with WAP 2.0 and full image support.(JPEG,
BMP, WBMP, GIF, PNG and WPNG). 99 PTT contacts (phone stores 200 with
multiple numbers and email) in up to 30 PTT groups. Supports AIM, YM and
ICQ. Can change from PTT to full duplex (cellular) while on a call. Also has
full duplex speaker phone.

Just give them a little while and they will be a PCS carrier, with Sprint,
after the spectrum swap.
