You've all heard this story 100 times. You buy a bunch of phones, get on
a family plan, you break ONE phone, and you go to Cingular to replace the
one phone that is broken. Save yourself the trip, here's Cingular's
customer service number: 1-800-EAT-****.

Sounds like an appropriate response. Why should I pay more for my service
to subsidize
your own lack of responsibility?

Cingular replaces the phone with a second hand phone.
I left Cingular for T Mobile, much happier.

That response is appropriate unless YOU need to buy a new phone, right?

Actually refurbished to as new condition, like other carriers, and other
consumer product companies, because it's a standard practice, and not a bad
one, since refurbished often gets more thorough testing than new.

Then why are you here?
I've tried both (along with other carriers), and am much happier with
Cingular: significantly better network coverage, much faster data, rollover,
etc.

Generally if I break something from my own clumsiness, I accept that
it's my responsibility to pay the price to replace it, or do without it.
And if I know in advance that buying a new replacement phone is
something I don't want to pony up ALL the cash for, then I get phone
insurance.

I asked about insurance for my phone (Treo 650) and was told that they
don't sell insurance for any phone that has an unsubsidized/replacement
retail price over $300.
They won't insure the high-end phones for the very reason why I +want+
to insure it: it's high replacement cost.

I am in complete agreement with you on the insurance issue. Why not
offer the policy, even at twice the cost for other phones? It does not
make sense, unless they are losing a lot on the current policy.

Re: Cingular Sucks
I did pay the price to replace it.

If you need a new phone or an accessory, don't waste your time going to
Cingular.

Re: Cingular Sucks
Let me reiterate, I don't object to paying full price for a new phone. I
object to Cingular's refusal to sell an existing customer a replacement
phone. Cingular's policy: no new service contract, no new phone.

Doesn't Cingular use Lock/Line? Funny how Sprint uses them and Treo
650's are insured there.
FWIW, there's a company called Safeware (www.sfaeware.com) that will
insure the unsubsidized cost of a Treo as a PDA. The cost for a one
year policy is $72.00 though. Comes out to $6 a month, however it's a
no-deductible policy.

Simple: many insurance companies will raise your homeowner's insurance
policy premium if you claim such a loss, even if it's realtively small.
Often times, the increase is larger than if you had just paid for the
replacement phone yourself, or picked up specific phone insurance. I
know of two agents who have told me the same thing.

No, they don't insure them because the premiums they would have to
charge to make such coverage work financially are higher than most
people are willing to pay.

I don't understand why people buy insurance for a $300 item PERIOD. If
it gets lost, stolen, or broken, just replace it.
If your 27" TV set were to fall off the shelf tomorrow and the CRT
were to implode from the impact, would you file a claim against your
homeowner's insurance? Of course not - you'd drive down to Circuit
****ty and plunk down $300 for a new one. Why should your cell phone
be any different?
>Simple: many insurance companies will raise your homeowner's insurance

BINGO. Insurance is really intended for CATASTROPHIC loss, like having
your house burn down. It is NOT intended to eliminate all possible
out-of-pocket expenses. Most people would be better off putting the
money they spend on insurance premiums into a self-insurance fund and
paying for losses themselves. The problem is most people lack the
discipline to do this - and insurance companies are taking advantage
of this and cashing in.
