My years old question that was never answered. I want to get rid of
my landline, but I still depend on it to send fax from my computer.
Almost one year past since I checked last time. So I want to check
with experts here once again. Can any new cellphone be used as a fax
modem so that I can send a fax from my PC?

I doubt a cellphone could be used as a fax modem. However, if there is a
way to connect your cellphone to your computer's fax modem, then it
could send probably send a fax.

On the other hand, eFax is a reasonably priced fax service that allows
you to send a fax from your computer.

Do what I did, I created a Stanaphone (www.stanaphone.com) VOIP account (its
free), they gave me a 914 area code phone number (NY), and I can receive
faxes which are sent, as a PDF file as an email attachment. So I don't need
to keep a fax machine up and can receive my faxes anywhere there is a
computer and printer available as I send my faxes to a Hotmail.com address.

If you can find a carrier that will sell you analog service, that will
work with a fax machine. We used to have that setup several years ago.

How do you send a fax with Stanaphone? The web-site only mentions receiving
    faxes.

Re: Which phone allows me to send faxes from my PC?

I realized that I wasn't solving his problem after I wrote and sent out that
post! It is half the solution though. I guess you could try another VOIP
company that supports T38. I did a google
    (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search)
and there are many solutions for faxing out through the Internet too. I know
you can send a fax through an ATA if it and the network support T38.

My Sunrocket VOIP line is suppose to be capable of faxing. I will give that
a try right now. It worked just fine, I will assume it can receive them too.
So get Sunrocket VOIP, carry the gizmo with you and you will have excellent
connectivity. I pay $16.53/month for unlimited US and Canada, with a $3
credit a month to all anywhere in the world(example 100 minutes free to
Israel or China)! All advanced calling features too, sound is better than
PSTN or cell lines (G.711 codec 80kc bandwidth) most of the time.

Email me to get more info, or send me your phone number and I will call you.
If you do go Sunrocket, please allow my phone number to be your promotion
code for a PAIR of Uniden (646-2) 2.4 GHz cordless phones (around $70). I
will receive $25 gift certificate from Amazon.com. BTW, I have never had a
NICER phone company, they recently gave everyone a $10 credit for an outage!
I wasn't even affected! Something like that has never occurred with
    Bellsouth!

So receive faxes through Stanafone, you don't need to be connected and can
print them from any computer with PDF reading capabilities. You don't have
to be connected at the time, and send faxes through an ATA and a VOIP
    provider such as Sunrocket.

GSM carriers don't sell analog service.

A GSM phone has no real dialup modem, just a sort of virtual modem which
makes a connection to a carrier's IWU (Inter Working Unit), located in some
service center. The IWU has the actual modem that can make analog data calls
and/or fax calls over the PSTN (public switched telephone network). If the
carrier doesn't provide an IWU, or if your account isn't provisioned for CSD
(Circuit Switched Data), then a GSM phone cannot data and/or fax calls. If
your account is provisioned for CSD, then all you need is to install the phone
as a modem with Windows Dial-Up Networking. For more information, see my
    webpage <http://navasgrp.home.att.net/tech/cingular/fax.htm>.

My Motorola V551 tries to send a fax... But it fails, indicating the
the line is busy. Someone suggested that I needed to add a feature to my
    service. I visited http://navasgrp.home.att.net/tech/cingular/fax.htm and
it may be that I need Data Connect, instead of the MediaNet that I have
now. I wasn't sure about that, so I called Cingular customer service.

After some confusion about which of my phones I am trying to use, and a few
times being put on hold, I was told that Cingular no longer supports the
use of phones as fax modems. I asked about provisioning the account for
CSD, and I didn't even get put on hold again, just a repeat of the phrase.

I should use a third party service if I want to send a fax.

I think that's right. I've got CSD on my account, and it works fine for data,
but when I just tried to send a fax, I got similar errors. I'm not terribly
concerned about that because I now use:
    * Fax1 <http://www.fax1.com/> (inexpensive) to send faxes.
    * eFax <http://www.efax.com/> (free) to receive faxes.
