As reported on a major TV news channel in Denver, a northern Coloraod
Cingular store was asking customers who were up grading their phones,
if they wanted to donate their old phones to charity. You guessed it.
The phones, including, in some cases, personal numbers/info loaded
into the phones, ended up being sold on Ebay.

    Be careful out there.

Any idiotic store employee can do this, in any store that takes things
in return. I've been to kmart many times and have seen store
employees not register my return and instead just put it 'aside' and
said 'pick something else out'. If you picked something else out,
you'd get no receipt. If you wanted cash back, they would then return
the returned item into a special basket for returns.
Its a fairly common practice, especially for employees that have low
wages. To just pick on Cingular is just silly; why not mention ALL the
    stores that rip people off?

How do we know those Cingular-donated phones weren't being sold on eBay
    by the recipient?

Or, how do know the money wasn't being given to a charity. If they have
ample phones to distribute for emergency only, selling the extras would
    give $$ for the charity.

I would also bet it was not a Cingular corporate owned store but rather an
    independent dealer doing this.

Oh my!! Folks actually turned their phones in without deleting their
addressbook, call lists, etc., and now it's an issue because someone
else got the phone? What were they thinking?

I don't think its silly that he is talking about Cingular in the Cingular
newsgroup. Why would he tell people to be careful and watch out for k-mart
    on the Cingular newsgroup?

Whether what he said was true or not should be researched by those that are
concerned. I don't think the posters message was intended to be an attack
on the Cingular corporation. He is simply telling people to look out for
scammers and know the identity of the charity and to be sure you know who
you are donating the phone to, which certainly is good advice.
