I've searched the groups for an answer and can't find it...apologies it
    it's a a well-known issue, but...

Every so often I get an "incoming data" call from some phone number I
don't know. I usually see it and hit "reject" because it doesn't seem
to amount to anything of us (no email, text message, etc.) What is it?
Is it someone trying to access my phone info or something else bad?

    Thanks.

On some phones, it will allow you to create caller groups.

Make a new group, put only that number in it, and then set the ring tone to
    none.

might be worth a shot if your phone does that sort of thing.

It's most likely a harmless fax call.

I guess the real question is this: How does the network KNOW it's a fax
    or data call?

I'm guessing here, but perhaps it's an ISDN number attempting to call
his cell phone. ISND does have the ability to flag certain calls as
data or voice. Whereas, a simple fax machine calling on a POTS line
won't be able to tell anything that it's a fax call until the call is
answered and the handshake tones are sent.

If the OP can post maybe the first six digits (area code and exchange)
of the number that keeps calling, maybe that'll help clear up the
mystery. Or, has the OP tried calling the number back during off-peak
or weekend hours? If so, what answers?

GSM has separate incoming numbers for voice, data, and fax.

It's been all over the map in terms of area code they've been coming
from. The latest came from 727.

I think I know what it is...I just called it back and there was a
recording. Something about special offers, will call you from time to
time, etc. Maybe it's a strategy to get you to call them back out of
curiosity(number you don't recognize trying to reach you, who knows)?
    Looks like it worked, huh?

Anyway, could be some automatic dialer that hits all kinds of
variations of phone numbers like is done with e-mail spam. Some go
    through and some don't.

It's annoying. I wish I could block data calls, but doesn't look like
it unless someone has a suggestion.

Why not have your number changed?

As I read through all the messages on this thread I remembered getting calls
like this myself. I too didn't answer the first 2 or three and - since I
don't give out my cell # very often was curious as to who it was.

Turned out it was a friend who was calling me with a calling card. He was
in the Houston area and yet I was getting 702-770-704 and other strange area
    codes.

I used to have a Nokia 8890 that got a few of them. WOW, what an
obnoxious ring! I couldn't find any way to change it but it didn't
happen enough to be a problem fortunately.
