North America uses 850/1900. Europe uses 900/1800. Cingular and former
AT&T towers use 850 and/or 1900. The tower integration that is going on
is removing towers where they overlap and do not increase coverage.
Where a 850 tower and a 1900 tower overlaps and a choice has to be
made, the practice is to remove the 1900 tower. This may sound strange
since shouldn't a higher frequency be better? Well that is not really
true. Lower frequencies penetrate solid objects such as concrete walls
better that high frequencies. A perfect example of this is driving
close to a car with a massive woofer in it. You know the trebel and
higher frequescy sounds are just as loud in tha car but the only thing
that can be heard ouside the car is the base which is a lower frequency
that can penetrate the body of the car. This will actially cause issue
with a few older cingular phones that only have the 1900 band. Thay
will have to be replaced.
