If I bought a Sony W800i off the internet would it work with Cingular? It is a GSM phone so I am guessing it will.

Also after I purchased it what would i have to do to get a plan through cingular?

Would I just sign up for one of the free phones and get the sim card out of it and go from there?

The w800i doesn't have 850mhz GSM, so yes it will work if it's unlocked
just by dropping in a 64k cingular SIM, but it will not work on half the
cingular network (the att wireless towers). you probably don't want
to use this phone on cingular because of that.

Most of Cingulars are not 850mHz right?

I was wondering if most are Cingular's networks are not 850 mhz. My brother has a Cingular phone and I switched his phone to only accept 900/1800 signals and I could not get a signal at all.

So do you think I could use the W800i at all? Is there anyway to make the W800i accept 850mHz network signals? Like a software update or something. I will probably email Sony and see what they have to say.

And you won't get anything in the US on those frequencies, US uses 850-1900.

I read somewhere that Cingular someday would be 850 only, if that's true, I
    can't say.

Not if it doesn't have that support already.

Ummm, the former Pacific Bell Mobile Services (CA and NV) which became
Cingular, has ALWAYS been GSM 1900...

The Carolinas (Bell South Mobility) was GSM 1900 as well, I believe...

I'm glad!! Cingular is 800/1900 so setting the phone to 900/1800 definatly
shuts ALL of Cingular off for him!

I live in a somewhat small town in Lousiana. So I am afraid if I get the W800i and only use the 1900mhz network I will not get any signal. The town I live in is Natchitoches.

    Greetings,

I believe any listing for 800mHz also includes 850mHz.

Go to www.wirelessadvisor.com and plug in your zip code. It should give you
a good idea what providers are in your area and what systems they use. I
did notice that Cingular uses both 1900 and 800 in all the cities they list
in LA by name so you just may get lucky.

I am going to wait and see if the new W850 will use the 850 networks. The w800i would work in my area but when I travel around to smaller cities I need to have the 850 network too. So I think will have to pass on the w800i.

The w850 better work with 850 networks!

Cingular is 800 there. The old AT&T System is 1900 so you actually have both
    there.
