A few days ago, Cingular and Nokia announced that Cingular was going to
be carrying the 850/1800/1900 version of the Nokia 9300, the phone I
have been waiting for for some time. The announcement also described a
rate plan, at $40+, to go with it. It sounded from the description as
though the plan was currently associated somewhow with the Blackberry,
but the announcement didn't go into much detail.

Does anyone know what this plan is? Is it different from the plan, I
think at $40/month, that people currently use with the Treo? Presumably
we will have to wait until the 9300 is actually out to find out whether
it actually works with the $20/month medianet plan.

I don't particularly want to use the machine for push email and the
like--I get enough email so that I prefer to handle it on a machine with
full sized keyboard and screen. But it would be nice to have a smart
phone that could browse the web, with a screen and keyboard adequate for
the purpose, and the Nokia looks a lot better from that standpoint than
    the Treo.

this device uses Blackberry OS in it. The money you are talking about is
    for a Blackberry plan

The 9300 uses Symbion, actually, an OS that has existed since long
before the Blackberry. Does the Blackberry run Symbion?

What is a Blackberry plan, and can I browse the web on my smart
phone--full version, not just specially tiny sites--without it?

The 9300 will be able to receive emails "PUSHED" to it just like the
Blackberry's. So when the email arrives on the server it will
automatically be sent to the handheld device like any of the current
Blackberry devices. This is different from the Treo 650 or other PDA
type devices where you must go out and retreive the email from the
server. Price should be about $40 or $45 for the service on top of
whatever Voice plan you would have.

Many handsets can be configured to check for and retrieve email automatically
at regular intervals, including my Motorola V551. That's not quite as quick
as "push" email, but is quite sufficient for my needs.

I, however, don't want push email. I do want to be able to browse the
web on my smartphone. Any idea whether I will be able to do that on the
    $20/month media plan?

Or you can set up a Hotmail account with SMS notification to your cellphone,
    PDA, etc. at no cost.

I receive a SMS for every email that arrives in that public email box. I can
decide to read it now or wait.

    No charge.

On Cingular ("orange"), unless you have a message package, each incoming
message costs 10 cents. If you get a lot of mail, that can add up.
