I have a new Motorola V220 phone (unlocked; not purchased from
Cingular). I cannot get it to send pictures or browse the web.

I set the browser settings per Cingular's web-based Tutorial
(confirming every setting multiple times), I set the MMS settings per
their Tutorial (again confirming every setting multiple times). I have
have powered down/up. I have cleared the cache. I have four bars of
signal. The little icon at the top of the phone does show that GPRS is
    available and ready for use.

When I open the browser, it shows "Connecting" for a long time
(probably for my 5 minute timeout setting), then says "Data Server not
available". It then shows how many bytes were transfered (about
    3,300).

When I try to send a multi media message (e.g., a one-word message with
a sound file), and then check the Message Status, it says "Sending in
progress." and then changes to the number of bytes sent. However, if
I then recheck the Message Status, it says "Error: Message could not be
    sent."

I've checked my settings repeatedly... Cingular's web-based Tutorials
seem very clear, but it still no worky...

    Ideas?

    Thanks!

    Steve

Be sure to use the right settings:
    * If you are using MEdia Net, then you need the "WAP" settings.
    * If you are using Data Connect, then you need the "ISP" settings.
    They are different!

Both very valid suggestions John, but I would add that a call to customer
service to verify that you do have a medianet plan on your account or
    nothing is going to work.

Did you visit https://www.cingular.com/media/media_net and have an
authorization code sent to your phone?

I can't remember if that enables web on the phone, or enables the login to
the feature-filled MediaNet web site ;-)

It never hurts to check, but Pay-as-you-go MEdia Net should be available even
if the account doesn't have a MEdia Net package.

you would think that - but there are instances where - for whatever reason
the pay per use does not get added. Go figure.

My account was one of those instances where even the pay-as-you-go wasn't
    available until I asked.

I was a previous AT&T customer. I had mMode on my last phone (a Sony
T616). I moved the SIM chip over, entered all the setup setup, and
figured (maybe incorrectly) I would have the same mMode surfing (i.e.,
    WAP).

A a follow-up, Cingular says this is because it us an unlocked (rather
than Cingular) phone. I can text and voice, but I can't send or
receive data (even pictures). Bummer. I've checked the settings
umpteen times... The worse news is, they want me to signup for two
more years (I still have a year on my four phone contract) to get a
    phone from them. Ridiculous.

If you still have a "blue" (ATTWS) SIM, then you need to use *mMode* settings
in your V220 -- Cingular MEdia and Data Connect settings *won't* work (since
you don't have an "orange" SIM)!

Did you try to set the WAP configuration via SMS?
    https://secure.mouse2mobile.com/clie...guredevice.asp
What does the feature list look like on your account?
Have you tried adding a media or messaging package to your account online?
