my mother is 91, and wants a cell phone for emergencies only.

she has had an att phone for several years, contact expired; and she never
    uses it.

costs her about $25 a month for the least minutes they had.

note; she is old, and paying a bill is ok, but having to enter numbers, buy
prepaid cards, etc. is not going to work.

any suggestions for service? anything out there that is cheaper than the
    $25/mo?

if nothing else, i was thinking of just cancelling the service, and letting
her dial '911 if she needs it (since the phone should still work for that)

    thanks.

I have to agree with Mr. MacMahon. Adding to a family plan is the
cheapest way (typically $9.99 a month.) The T-mobile $19.99 will still
get you to the $25 mark after taxes and junk fees so it wouldn't make
    too much sense to switch.

All of these suggestions are nice and valid. However you should know that
you are correct in that you can simply cancel the service and allow her to
carry the phone to only call 911. If she never uses the phone at all and
the only reason to carry it is for the 911 attribute then do that. While
$9.99 is not a lot in the overall scheme of things, it is over $100.00 a
    year!

    Re: what service to get?

thats the one i did; cancel service, use 911

she is in detroit, im in california, but since she never uses it, i think
the market issue likely wouldnt be an issue.

but the $100/year + the increased cancellation fee (cingular tells me they
charge the cancellation fee PER LINE not per account, so if i want to
    change, im screwed) sold me.

also, i gave her an extra phone we had lying around, car charger etc. so
that she would have a spare in the car at all times, just in case she forgot
hers. so now SHE has two phones and doesnt have to pay for them.

thanks for the suggestions; the tmobile deal was second on the list, but i
    just couldnt pass up free!!
