I'm looking at picking up one of these two phones but would like to be able
to use it as a laptop modem as well from time to time. Can anyone give
their personal experience using either of these as a laptop modem and how
easy it was to setup and the throughput results?
Thanks

The V557 is faster than the V3 RAZR, which doesn't have EDGE.
For more info on Cingular data, see the Cingular FAQ below.

"modem" might be the wrong word to use.
Cingular offers internet access via their data network using GPRS or EDGE,
but an acutal dial-out modem is a different thing.
Ease of use for GPRS/EGPRS is just like a dialup modem, once it is
installed and configured. My Motorola v551 allows me to ignore or answer a
call while in data mode. I can't do both.

In other words, you have to ignore them all of accept them all?
Any details or clarification?

If I have a data connection, WAP or tethered, I get an indicator on the
phone screen of an incoming call, and soft function keys to answer or
ignore that call.

Ok, I follow what you're saying now.
When I'm tethered, half my calls ring my phone and let me answer it,
other half go to voice mail...unpredicatable.

Now I'm off your trail... Don't you have any control over that?
I haven't given it much thought, and just leave it in whatever the defualt
mode is. I generally care about phone calls more than the data connection,
so I would want to break in for a call.
I suppose I could switch to the "only ring for numbers in my phonebook",
but I don't bother.

Oh...nevermind...my mistake. Wasn't thinking. That was with my tethered
Sprint phone.

What phone? If the phone has marginal processing capacity, and is busy with a
full speed packet data transfer (as compared to an idle packet data
connection), it may not be able to respond to the network fast enough to have
the call ring through.
