    I'm not so sure. We're now entering a permanent era of fossil fuel scarcity,
    with the price of oil headed ever higher. When gasoline hits (say) $5/gallon,
    there may well be renewed interest in high-speed rail, which is far more
    energy efficient than alternative modes of transportation.

    All forms of transportation are effectively subsidized. Highways are publicly
    owned and maintained, and thus have a large cost advantage over privately
    owned and maintained railways. In addition, direct operating costs of private
    passenger cars don't begin to pay the social costs of resource depletion,
    pollution, and waste.
