    Re: Opinion on Cingular?

In short, I live in ALbany NY area, and cingular here is wonderful
NEVER EVER had a problem with there service, there sales reps well
thats another story but I wont go there.

If its the PTT service I would stay away from it, tried it , hated
it, worked with them on the problems and I was NOT satisfied......
Also sales person said plan was going to be so much a month and
customer service said OH NO , its going to be this much.

So since we wanted/needed PTT so we switched to nextel and am very
happy. I would switch back to cingular for PTT only but with only 2
Phones on the market and IMHO there cheesey phones and the clarity
leaves allot to be desired, the kicker was that NO one in the store
could demo it for us? Either there phones were not working or some
    other lame excuse.

Verizon , Hmmmm OH NO, NO WAY, never again, nada, sorry, nope NEVER

I had cingular for some years. Then they closed down the repair facility where
I'd take phones for service and tMobile opened a retail store within walking
distance (the Cingular store was about 40 minutes drive).

I did what seemed like the logical thing and switched.

Now I'm of the same mind as another poster: with cell phones, there's really
only one parameter to judge by and that's service availability.

Customer service is nice, location of stores is nice, selection of phones is
nice, but the real nitty-gritty is how often you get those bars on your phone.

Ihave switched from Sprint to Cingular about a week ago I found Cingular
customer service, sound quality and it's coverage is much better than
    Sprint.

That is very interesting. Sprint usually blows-away Cingular because if you
do not get a signal with Sprint, you can roam on Verizon which has very good
    coverage. Where are you located?

Now thats really weird, because I came from Cingular, and all of my
friends and family say that I sound better on the nextel PTT and
Cellular Calls, its clearer, no background noise and works great,
    could be the phone also.

(In fact Cingular now has arguably the best digital network in the USA.

I have a friend who's been on Cingular since long, long before it was
Cingular. He now has several phones on Cingular and has nothing bad to
say about them. He travels quite extensively around the eastern US, and
claims he seldom if ever encounters a dead spot.

The addition of GSM850 (from its acquisition of ATTWS) has made a HUGE
    difference in Cingular's (GSM) coverage.

Native GSM coverage is now neck-and-neck with CDMA coverage, and some
GSM cheerleaders will even tell you it is superior :^O.

My base phone has been with me since Cellular One days. Been through the ATT
buy out and now this. I have 4 phone on the plan now and for my needs
Cingular offers the best plans and coverage. I have no complaints about
getting connected or using the phone. Works fine........when it works.

The customer service now that it's Cingular just plan sucks. They have no
clue. I've been in a 6 month struggle with them and find it takes 900 phone
calls to get anything done, usually wrong. It's getting to the point of
frustration were I've actually started looking at other options.

Actually, the comments are mostly about his years of TDMA service. I
haven't heard much about his GSM service, other than a brief try at
ATTWS when they first began GSM coverage in Chicago and it was practically
unusable if you weren't downtown. He got rid of the ATTWS phones within
    the trial period IIRC.

I ended up on Verizon more by happenstance than anything. At the time I
knuckled under and bought one, Ameritech Cellular had the best deal
going by far, 200 minutes of local calling for $39.95/month. Home
calling area was something like the north half of Illinois, the east
half of Wisconsin and the northwest quarter of Indiana. From there,
Ameritech sold to GTE, GTE divested to Verizon, and the rest is history.
It appears Verizon counts our Ameritech days as customer longevity, so
they talk to us nicely when we call. But if Ameritech didn't come up
with that super deal, we could well have started and stayed with Cingular.

This is very true. However it is important to understand that with all
carriers, including Cingular, native coverage is only part of the
equation. GSM falls short of CDMA, and even TDMA, once you start
roaming, and getting into rural areas. Also, with CDMA you get all that
rural AMPS coverage. People can complain about analog, but AMPS still
has the most geographic coverage in the U.S., and unless you have one of
the GAIT handsets, you don't get any of it.

    > Native GSM coverage is now neck-and-neck with CDMA coverage, and some

They may tell you that, but it isn't true. Watch the words these people
use very carefully, as they are often taken directly from the carrier's
marketing people. What matters to many people it total coverage, not a)
total digital coverage, b) total native digital coverage, c) total
    all-digital network, etc.

A number of the newer cdma phones do not support AMPS.

-Not all CDMA phones have AMPS support. The main difference here is
that many CDMA phones do support it, but nearly all GSM phones do not.
