Is it possible to upgrade to a GSM phone without changing rate
plans? I have a TDMA phone now, with a $39.99/month for 1000 minutes
with rollover rate plan (always Cingular, not AT&T), and I really don't
want to pay more for fewer minutes (and lose my rollover minutes in the
    process).
If I buy my own GSM phone, will Cingular activate it in place of my
TDMA phone? I've never had a problem with that in the past, but that
    didn't involve switching to GSM...

Sorry to say they won't do it. I tried to get my old TDMA plan onto my new
GSM service. They claim it is a different system, etc. etc. etc. I had
over 1800 mins, + M2M and N& W free with AT&T TDMA. The best you can do is
Cingular 1500 mins for $49.99 but you get no rollover or N&W mins. However,
be sure to ask for the additional 200 mins promotion - they won't tell you
about it. That will take your mins up to 1700 per month. You do get
    unlimited M2M.

Good luck P.S. be sure to get your plan on the 1st or the last day of the
month so you don't get hit with a prorated bill for the current month. I
learned that one the hard way.

That would be the first or last day of your BILLING CYCLE, not the calander
    month!

    Per AT&T:

    >GSM service. They claim it is a different system, etc. etc. etc.

Same experience here, so I switched to tMobile.

Was planning to go back to Cingular once the contract was up because of
Cingular's superior coverage - but tMobile's been improving in our area and
maybe by the time the contract is up I'll stay with tMobile.
