Are other people experiencing constant dropped calls or is it just me??
I can be on a call with full signal and not move from my seat yet, all
of a sudden I can't hear the person on the other end and then the call
    ends. I don't get it...

I called Cingular and they said I didn't have all the updates they
sent. I turn my phone off sometimes just not everyday. Is turning your
phone off everyday key to good service? My callers as well as myself
    are getting disgusted.

I live in the N. NJ/NYC area. I am no longer on contract and am
considering a change in carrier. So, am I the only one getting
    dropped calls constantly?

    Re: Another Dropped Call Thread

What type of phone do you have? How long have you had it? When was
the last time you had your SIM update? (are you on a 32k SIM or 64k
SIM) Have you ever dropped your phone or got it wet? Do you have a
BLUE ATT SIM or an ORANGE Cingular SIM? Way too many questions to
answer without actually looking at the phone anyone of the above things
could be causing the issue you are having. Why not take a few minutes
and stop by a store and have someone take a look at it.

My service is solid inside and out of buildings and pretty much every
where I travel. (Baltimore to South Central PA to Philadelphia) I
can't remember when I had a dropped call.

I have a 64K Cingular Sim with a Motorola 551 phone. No, never dropped
    it or got it wet.

Sim update -- I've called customer service on occasion. Each time they
blame the problem on the fact that I don't have the latest updates. I
do turn my phone off and on - just not everyday.

I guess I could stop by a store but I'm not about to sign a 2 year
contract so that I can get a new phone.

Might not be very useful, since I'm in California (Bay Area), but I don't
think I've ever had a dropped call in the 3 or 4 years I've had Cingular.

    Re: Another Dropped Call Thread

Some of the older V180's, V220's had issues with numerous dropped
calls. Motorola's solution was to make sure the phone was power cycled
atleast once every 24 hours to make sure it reregistered with the
network. I don't remember seeing anything on the V551 but you might
want to try that for a few days to see if it improves you service. If
you've had your phone for less than a year you can try and go through
Warranty Exchange (800) 801-1101. Also check and see what brand SIM
card you have. There was a recent recall on the "GEM PLUS" brand 64k
SIMS. We've been replacing a bunch of them.

How do I know if it is a "GEM PLUS" brand? It only says Cingular 64K.

    Degrading Reception...

[QUOTE=Compulady]Are other people experiencing constant dropped calls or is it just me??

I had the same problem with dropped calls. I live in NYC. I've had my V551 for about 10 months, and it worked perfectly, then around October, I started getting your scenario: Sitting still, full bars, voice fades out, call drops.

I actually saw my bars go from full, to none, to full on one of these calls. I called cingular, they gave me the "turn off your phone for updates" song and dance. I did and do, it doesn't help. I called again, they sent me a new phone.

It's a newer version of the V551, but has the Edge icon on the screen. My older one didn't.

The dropped calls stopped, but starting in December, my reception has gone down hill. I used to be able to walk around my apartment, my girlfriend's apartment, and work without any service interruption. Now I have to stay near a window.

Went to a Cingular store. They replaced my sim card. Still the same problem.

Went back to the Cingular store, they said to call Cingular and see if I can work something out with them for another phone.

I feel something has changed. How can a signal degrade with a phone? I haven't dropped it or gotten it wet.

I'm really going crazy on this. My roommate has a cheap Nokia with Cingular and he's blah blah blahing with his girlfriend all over the apartment without a problem. I'd fork out the money for another phone, but I have no idea what to get. What if I buy another phone that works great, then starts losing reception? Doesn't make sense. All I need is GREAT reception and BT for my headset.

    Suggestions, anyone?

Take it into a Corporate store and have a rep look at it. The GEM PLUS
have a unique shape on the contact side as opposed to the ALTO cards.
If you request a new card because of the dropped call issue they will
replace it for you free of charge.

This might explain the occasional "INSERT SIM" messages I'm getting when
there clearly are no mechanical/contact problems responsible for it. But
from what I read, Cingular stores now only have the 3G SIMS for
distribution, and these have compatibility issues with some non-3G phones.
    Can you clarify/debunk this?

That is exactly the problem. Although with the LG model phones (c2000,
1500, F9200, F7200) were having major issues Tech support figured out a
fix and was sending and OTA to correct the problem. Those affected
will recieve a FREE admin text message telling you to power cycle your
phone after you get the text message and this issue should be fixed.

On the metal contact part of the SIM card all of the GEM PLUS SIM's are
    stamped GEM PLUS.
On the Axalto brand SIM's there is no marking on the metal part. Also
if you have the whole card the brand is printed on there as well.
