Have recently been having troubles with cingular network.

First, when I power up from being on the plane, my phone won't tell me
that I have waiting messages, even 3 hours later. I've resorted to just
checking voicemail immediately after power up.

More alarming though is the problem where I recieve a text message
about 24 hours later than the sender says she sent it! I received other
messages from her and other people in that time frame, but for some
reason 1 of them just got lost.

Called customer support and they give me the run around: we'll reset
your phone, could be senders network, blah blah.

I recently changed my network on my phone to "t-mobile" from
"cingular", because they have a tower close to my home and reception is
much better. Could this change be the cause of my late text message?
Any other ideas? Anyone else having this problem?

Yes you answered your own question. If you have a Cingular account and
you've forced your phone onto a TMobile tower then you have a lower
priority for voice and data traffic. Set your phone to automatic for
the tower selection and it should help solve your problem.

You could check how quickly the service works by sending a text message
to yourself. See how fast it comes back to you. If you are on a
Cingular tower it should be within a few seconds of when you send it.

    thanks juan.

weird thing is that when I went to change it, both BAND and TYPE are
    already set to automatic.

So I guess when I changed it to t-mobile it wasn't a permanent change.

So if my phone is picking up t-mobile while in auto mode, maybe that
    explains the delays?

no sometimes your phone is out of the area, but the system doesn't know it..
so it sent you the message but it didn't actually make it to your phone..
the system marked it as read and moved on..
then when you rebooted your phone it checked for any messages that the phone
didn't get.. cause that's what it does when its first turned on.
even tho the message was marked read by the system the phone knows it never
saw it, so it retrieved it.
a few days and that message would have gotten removed from the system and
you would have never saw it.

same thing happens with voicemail too.
sometimes this also happens when one message is being sent while another is
being retrieved.. it just gets set aside and it takes a reboot to get it.

if your phone is constantly switching towers or you travel alot during the
day its probably a good idea to turn it off and back on at night so it can
    get all the system updates.
