According to Cingular, if I sign up for the family plan and have 4 different
phones, the caller ID will only show my name, regardless of whose phone it
is. Is that normal ? Seems like it would show the "users name" that's
    listed.

Re: Caller Id - Is this correct ?

It shows the name of the person that holds the account at Cingular
(ie my cell phone shows up as my wife on caller ID because the bills
    are in her name).

If you're calling a home or cell phone that has a phonebook in it,
and your family member names are in that phonebook, it will override
Cingular's CID though and show the caller name that's stored in
their phonebook under the incoming number.

Strange, I have the family plan with 4 phones and each has an
"assigned name", ie each family member associated with there
respective first names on there phone numbers and they all come up
    separately on caller id.

Thanks, I guess that does answer my question, though I would think that with
the technology we have today, it wouldn't be that hard to make it have
    separate names

Thanks Rob, I knew the phonebook would override, I was mainly thinking about
the normal Land lines and such. I'm debating on whether I want to go with
Wireless caller or just leave my name. I don't overly care, other than it
just seems weird that can't do any better

Hmm, I wish I had your strangeness Mark. But I've asked two different
Cingular people and I got the same answer both times. So you must have got
    that "special" service

    No, that is incorrect.

When I signed up for three lines of service, under my business name, all
three of my Sprint phones transmitted their respective phone numbers,
followed by my business name. I phoned and got a very pleasant woman at
Sprint, and I asked her if I could permanently block caller ID from being
transmitted on all outbound calls, and I explained that I did not want my
business name being sent out on my son's phone, etc.

She told me that Sprint could change the caller ID to transmit the names of
each respective user, and I gave her the list of which name should be
associated with each of the three lines. She entered it into the system and
told me that it would take about 4 hours to propagate throughout the Sprint
    network.

Sure enough, a few hours later we each tested our lines by dialing into our
home landline, which has caller ID, and our personal names appeared, rather
than my business name. So I did not have to block outbound caller ID (the
Sprint rep mentioned that a lot of people don't accept blocked calls, and
that this might compromise my ability to reach people using my Sprint PCS
phone). I ended up getting exactly what I wanted, thanks to a knowledgeable
and helpful Sprint rep. I did not even know that it was possible for them
    to make that change.

This took place about 2 months ago. I assume that it is possible for any
multi-line account to request individualized caller ID information to
transmit on each of the respective lines.

This isn't the Sprint group -- it's the Cingular group.

Maybe- Then maybe because mine is a business account. He'll i
don't know, but i do know that each line is separated.

My daughter (Jennifer) has one of the phones and calls us on our land
line all the time and it says "Jennifer xxxx", not "Mark xxxx".

Also on my bill it's got the names separated by phone number.

Sorry if you feel my info is bad.

Re: Caller Id - Is this correct ?

When you say Business, do you mean it's tied into a corporate discount plan
? Like my company has with Cingular or do you mean you got the phones under
"Mark's Repair shop" and then added the family to that ?

I'm not sure why or where it makes a differences if it was a business
phone\plan or a standard plan. I suspect it's one of those things that they
could do if they wanted, but don't like to for some reason or another. Maybe
in your case they made an exception.

I don't think your info is bad, as I'm learning over and over with Cingular,
Every person you ask a question, you get a different answer. As others have
pointed out, sometimes it's just a matter of screaming really loud until you
get what you want, versus what they want you to have

This seems to be a common complaint. Here's a report from one subscriber on
getting the correct Caller ID for each line:

Keep at it till you find the right guy. Many have said it can not be done,
even third level managers. But a guy from Cingular Data Tech : 8664902666
did it in about 3 minutes time.
