Sorry if this has been covered; I haven't seen a recent post about it.

I'm moving back to DC soon. I had Verizon before, which was great, but
I hate how they are hijacking their phones, so I'm considering moving
    to Cingular.

My question: what can you tell me about the coverage in the DC area?
Any plans for Cingular to work in the Metro? And how is the coverage
between DC out to the beaches?

    Thanks!

Other than the lack of coverage in the Metro, Cingular is okay in DC.

Verizon is much better of course, as evidenced by both the JD Power and
    Consumer Reports surveys.

Not true. Differences between carriers are small.

I live in Alexandria, inside the DC beltway, and have both. I find essentially
no difference between them anywhere inside and around the DC beltway, up to and
in Baltimore, or over past Annapolis to the Delaware beaches.

What we do notice is when we travel -- the Verizon phone works much, much better
in most major cities that we visit, including San Francisco, Atlanta, and
    Denver.

I was in that area in February, including Alexandria. The Cingular phone
worked fine, except in the Metro, which I was using a lot.

I haven't been to Denver in a while, but in Atlanta and the SF Bay Area,
you're correct about Verizon being much better. All the surveys show the
    same thing.

Within a year or two, you might be able to use Cingular in the Metro. I
found it very useful to be able to call from the Metro, as I was often
meeting people in the area, and wanted to coordinate where and when to meet.

I agree that it sucks regarding what Verizon does to its phones, but are
you sure that you are mad enough about this to sacrifice the coverage
    that Verizon provides?

I like the rollover, but it would be nice for it to work in the metro.
Frustrated to see a verizon caller when I have no service. The other
advantage is the deal they give with a voice plan for their pc card
data plan. They have excellent coverage on their high speed data and
with voice it is only $59.95. Same deal as cingular but better
coverage with the Verizon for the data. Above ground the voice coerage
in DC is the same as Verizon, in my experince.

In my short time there in February, I found the same. Having coverage in
the Metro can be a big plus for some people (including tourists). It
looks like that the other carriers will eventually have coverage in the
Metro, because Verizon will be forced to lease space on its "towers" to
other carriers that want to cover the Metro.

The other advantage of the Verizon data service, besides having far more
coverage (EV-DO versus HSPDPA) is that it is higher speed than what
    Cingular offers.

Inside the Beltway I've seen comparable coverage from VZW and Cingular.
However I've gotten a lot more fast-busy signals on VZW and had to use
my Cingular phone to actually make a call.

When you head south you'll find a lot of areas that are covered by
"partner" networks. If you're on a national plan that only covers
native VZW networks you may get hit with roaming bills. I love
Cingular's national plans because if you have a signal, it's a "free"
    call.

I just can't stand the CDMA voice quality, but that might just be the
    crappy VZW-hijacked phone.

Verizon does not offer any plans that allow roaming, you can only use
    partner networks.

Whether this is bad or good, for either carrier, is open to debate, as
it means that in some areas you get no coverage at all, even though
    there is a compatible network.

Same with Verizon. For better or for worse.

I'm sure it is, since every test has shown that CDMA voice quality is
    better than GSM voice quality.

    Actually just the opposite.

Not true. In addition, Cingular has a $20/month unlimited package that's far
    less expensive than Verizon.

Yes, and their all-around disregard for customer use of services is enough
to tell them to **** off. They cripple the phones, block IP ports, throttle
services and nickel-and-dime you for every least-little add-on feature. NO
    THANKS.
