Cingular is currently 'encouraging' me to upgrade my TDMA phone to a GSM
unit. I don't have a problem with the GSM part, but I have a dual mode
TDMA + AMPS phone and currently I spend quite a bit of time in AMPS-only
territory. When I have friends at my cabin with their Cingular GSM
phones, they lose signal miles away, so I know its not just the TDMA
    that's dying.

Cingular has nothing like a dual mode GSM + AMPS phone. Is there anyone
    who makes such a unit?

Also, how does Cingular deal with 'unlocked' phones purchased elsewhere
    and brought into their network?

Nokia 6340(i) and Sony Ericcson T62u.

    See <http://tinyurl.com/fdhxw>.

The SE unit is a piece of crap IMHO while the 6340i, while quite
outdated, is a very functional phone.

About the only place you can find these is EG^HBay and you know what a
    crap shoot EG^HBay is.

    Not a problem.

No such animal anymore. There used to be a couple of models like that.

You need to change carriers to a carrier that still supports AMPS if you
want coverage in that type of place. There is really no down side to
switching from TDMA+AMPS to CDMA+AMPS. It's not like you're giving up
international roaming with that type of switch.

You're going from poor customer service to abysmal customer service if
one switches to Sprint. You're going from 850 Mhz phones that usually
will work indoors, to 1900 MHz phones that often won't.

They may not be willing to allow you to use the AMPS portion of their
network, or they may decide that any phone that supports TDMA is
something that they don't want to deal with.

    Not TDMA (I already have a dual TDMA+AMPS phone). I want a GSM+AMPS
    phone.

Cingular still supports AMPS. Its all they've got for their rural area
coverage. The problem is that to get AMPS out in the country, you've got
to have a TDMA+AMPS phone and they are phasing out TDMA. Their GSM
    phones are GSM only.

Thanks. I'm looking into that Nokia (a tri-band phone actually
    GSM+TDMA+AMPS).

    Actually:
    * Tri mode (AMPS, D-AMPS, GSM)
    * Dual band (800/850, 1900)

Where I am the GSM service works everywhere the old analogue service
worked. That's the only reason as many people use Cingular here as they do.

Cingular will not newly activate a GAIT phone here.

I know of someone that got the GAIT feature not so long ago, by calling
Customer Care and being very persistent, but can't say for sure if
    that's still possible or not.
