Verizon has managed to get positive headlines for its attempt to make
music downloads popular "over the air" by announcing that it is
dropping its original "pay up front" demand - a monthly $15
subscription fee.
But a song which costs $0.99 to download to a PC still costs $1.99 to
buy via CDMA data.
The phone which is the basis of the latest story is LG's Chocolate
device, which Verizon sells for $150 ("after rebate with new two year
activation") - and for $249 with a one-year contract. There is also a
Samsung music phone involved in the promotion.
There is another up-front cost: the storage chip (two gig capacity)
costs another $100 on top.
So far, Verizon's attempts to get into the iPod market have been a
resounding flop.
It started out in January by "upgrading" the Samsung phones with new
software so subscribers could buy tunes from V Cast - the Verizon
music store. But subscribers were outraged to discover that not only
were they stung for the $15 a month fee, but also, the software
disabled their phones. Before the upgrade, they could play MP3:
after, this feature was broken. It could only play Windows Media
files (WMA).

You don't have to look very hard to find a 2 gig memory chip for less
than $40.

Cingular is also going to release the very same phone. Was told this

Not microSD, not a good brand, and not a good retailer.
$40 for a good quality 1 GB microSD card from a good retailer:
<http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820208043>
2 GB microSD card is currently a Verizon exclusive at $100.

Maybe this one will be different, and it is getting good reviews, but
I've personally been unimpressed by every LG handset I've ever tried,
and this one is very expensive.

Try manufacturing phones with those flash cards and you won't be using tiger
as a shining example any more.
Tigerdirect gets overruns and last years models sold to them at a loss. What
tiger direct offers consumers is irrelevent to the costs of putting together
a product from new parts. No phone company is going to go to tiger direct
and take the memory sticks apart, and modify the phones to use them and then
modify the phones with every batch of a hundred memory sticks to use every
single kind of chip that is out there.

What in the world are you talking about? Why would anyone rip apart a
phone to place a memory card in a slot? If you are unhappy with Tiger
how about this one?
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211314) I'll
look up some more if you want me to. I bet you a 2 Gig chip that I find
a dozen sources at less than $40.
The point is, the $100 dollar "on top" cost in the original posting is
an exaggeration except for anyone not willing to shop around.

Even your examples show that $100 is hyperbole. I wasn't aware that
Tiger is not a "good retailer". I have been satisfied with them as an
occasional customer.

My example shows the only 2 GB card to be $100.

I'll take the bet. That's a standard SD card, not a microSD card. A
standard SD card WON"T WORK. A miniSD card WON'T WORK either. It must
be a microSD card. I'll send you my mailing address for the $100 2 GB
microSD card.

Not true. Verizon has an initial exclusive on the only card that works,
and is charging $100.

Maybe Steve thinks he can squish it down to size in a vice.

Actually I was thinking about this...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820171126
As for Tiger, I have ordered from them at work since Newegg is not a
vendor account and have never had a problem. I've also ordered a few
things personally with no problem including my SLVR L7 since I didn't
need all the stuff with the one at Newegg.

That's 1 GB. 2 GB is an initial Verizon exclusive at twice the price.

The basic problem with Tiger is that it sells so many seconds, returns,
and overstocks.

That's still the wrong chip, it's SD not MICRO SD. And as of today
the 2GB microSD is being reported as "debut." No it is not an
exaggeration and no you won't find it in a dozen places unless you
consider 24+ different Verizon stores as "dozens of places."
From Biztoolbelt: "The 2GB launch was timed to go along with the
Chocolate's debut on Verizon Wireless. Verizon's retail stores across
the country will be stocking the 2GB chip for $99."
From Gizmodo: "Unfortunately for most of the country, these 2GB cards
are going to be sold exclusively at Verizon Wireless stores for the next
60 days. That means you're not going to be able to hop online and grab
one from NewEgg or Amazon."
