I am thinking of switching to Cingular from Tmobile as they are
supposed to have better coverage...how have people's experiences with
Cingular been overall? What are the pluses and minuses of each
    service?

Quality of coverage varies from place to place. What coverage area(s)
    do you care about?

Cingular has better coverage, and uses the better 800 MHz band mostly,
but its plans generally offer fewer minutes.

I had Cingular for several years. Switched to tMob couple years ago.

tMob's coverage in my area (Philadelphia) is noticeably inferior to Cingular's.
At the local YMCA, can't even get one bar on tMob yet Cingular and Verizon users
are just talking away. Ditto one of my workplaces up in Oaks PA: tMob dead
    inside the building, Cingular/Verizon a-ok.

Having said all that, I found Cingular's service/customer interface so poor that
    I'm sticking with tMobile.

Jack, appreciate your reply. I am thinking of getting a family
plan...I think I get 2100 minutes instead of the 3000 I am getting with
Tmob presently for a similarly priced plan, but for an extra 20 bucks,
I can have nights start at 7 for all the phones on the plan. So I
think this would make the 2 plans quite comprabable in terms of
minutes. Plus the roll over minutes are a nice plus.

Pete, thanks for your reply as well. I have heard that Tmob's customer
service is nicer than Cingular's...but I get so many dropped calls and
poor coverage areas with Tmob that I really think I need to switch.

What's the purpose of a phone? To talk on! Go with the best coverage, it's
not like you talk to CS every day. I'm with Cingular and so far this year I
think I've talked to CS twice. They satisfied me both times.

I find that strange that you value customer service (which most people
deal with on a very infrequent basis) more than having service at
    places you frequent (YMCA/workplaces).

The sad reality is that today customer "service" sucks most everywhere--- or
as syndicated talk show host Clark Howard call it, customer no-service.

That's actually just the market giving people what they really want most
(no matter what they might say): low prices. If people wanted good
customer service enough to demand and pay for it, then we would get it.

I would have agreed with you until about last week. If you ever try anything
out of the ordinary with Sprint PCS (like upgrade a phone and decide not to
keep it one day later), God forbid if they don't **** up everything you
thought was right with your wireless plan. Three times in one month was
enough for me and I bailed on them. My choice was Cingular and Verizon and I
chose not to consider T-Mobile due to their lagging technology and PCS only
coverage (too many holes on the fringes of urban areas). In the end, I chose
Verizon because I trust CDMA more and Verizon has excellent customer service,
not to mention that Verizon has better coverage in the upper midwest either
    directly or through a partner.

I probably *should* frequent the YMCA.... but unfortunately I don't...-)

The workplace? That's something of a rub but voicemail gets me through.

It's definitely a close call for me.

The main thing that got me off of Cingular was that when I wanted to go to a SIM
based phone, they wouldn't transfer my TDMA-based family-plan account - wanted
me to sign up for something that was about twice as many dollars per month for
    less service.

The two others were their closing the service facility where I used to take
phones that needed fixing, and the location of their outlets.

Dunno what one does with tMob for service... and now it seems moot given that
SIM-based phones are so easily/readily/cheaply available (as in rooting through
the township's phone disposal bin and grabbing a couple of old Nokia candy bar
    phones every so often)

Cingular's closest "real" store is in a huge mall that's nominally close to
there but can take anywhere from one to three man hours to get to, visit a
store, and get home from. I can get to Cingular's on a bike in less than five
minutes.... so that's a *really* parochial factor... But it's pretty nice to be
able to go over there and ask a question of somebody face-to-face and get an
    intelligent, non-scripted answer.

Yeah I use my cell phone mostly for talking...so reception and battery
life tend to be the two most important things.

if cingular has very good coverage where you live, then i say get cingular since GSM has better battery life compared to CDMA

    Battery Life: GSM > CDMA

    Reception: CDMA > GSM
