    hi,

I am planning to get a cingular gophone or net10 prepaid phone, or some
other types. For prepaid phone, is there a charge on receiving calls?

    Thanks.

Yes -- it's "air time" just like on outgoing calls.

To my great amazement, verizon has (or did last week...)
a prepaid offerng available through Wal Mart stores, which
    has/had... free nights and weekends.

a friend saw it in the paper and asked me to gve
him a lift to one. i don't remember what time
    they considered to be nighttime...

(yes, i know this is alt.cellular.cingular, but,,,)

For verizon prepaid plan, they have unlimited In Calling(Verizon mobile
to Verizon mobile). And their unlimited night minutes is from 9pm to
    6am.
But if you don't use it too much, it is still not good. You need to pay
    $150 * 3 = $450/year to keep it active.

Yes, if you make one call a day, you're paying 99¢per day plus airtime,
    hardly a good deal.

The best prepaid deal is on PagePlus. You can buy a Verizon prepaid
phone, but activate it on PagePlus. As low as 10¢ per minute, and a very
low minimum. Plus you get excellent coverage, better than on T-Mobile,
    Cingular, or Virgin's prepaid.

Such a sweeping generalization isn't meaningful (even if true, which
it's not), and is thus a disservice. What matters to any given person
is coverage in areas that person cares about. Since different carriers
are better/worse in different areas, the proper advice is to check/test
the carriers in areas you care about _before_ settling on a service.

Re: Will I get charged for receiving calls?

It's also worth pointing out that Cingluar has a similar plan.

Just recently, I switched from Verizon prepay, which I had for over a
year, to Cingular. The primary reason for this was the $1 a day verizon
    charges.

On my Cingular plan, I get the same rate ($.10/min) and only have to
pay $1 on the days I actually use my phone. I save at least $10 a
month. Not a lot of money, but the $30 phone paid for itself in 3
months and every little bit helps.

Besides, it means that Verizon Wireless doesn't get any more of my
cash. My beef is with Verizon, which is actually a completely seperate
company, but when Verizon Wirless does well it helps Verizon just as
    much.

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications and
Vodafone Group, with 55 and 45 percent ownership respectively.

The PagePlus plan has several advantages over the Cingular plan.

-Minimum cost of $10 every four months. 10 cents per minute is with $80
card, but you only have to buy that once, then you can buy the $10 cards
    to keep the account active.

    -No $1 per day charge.

-Far better coverage than Cingular. You get the entire CDMA network,
which is much larger than the GSM network, plus the entire AMPS network.

Downside is that if you're off the Verizon extended network then there
    are roaming charges.

Cingular GSM coverage is comparable to CDMA[2000] coverage.

Just had a look at the page plus website. It is too simple, does not
    look like a reliable carrier.
