I purchased an unlocked Sony Ericsson w810i from newegg.com, and have
been EXTREMELY happy with it so far. took my SIM card from my old
Razr V3 and popped it into the new phone. The new phone worked
perfectly. I went to Sony Ericsson's site and had them SMS the new
phone all the required settings for Cingular MMS and WAP connectivity,
and the phone's been talking to the Cingular network flawlessly ever
since.

Same here with a Moto V188 I got from TigerDirect.com (says
T-Mobil on startup). Went in to the Cingular shop, popped a
SIM into it, and it works just fine.

Re: Unlocked really work?
I just got a Sony Ericsson phone off eBay, it was listed as an AT&T phone.
I am not sure if my phone is unlocked, probably not, since it did not
specify in the listing.
I am a former AT&T / NOW Cingular customer and the phone I got works just
fine.
The former owner left his sim in the phone, and his phone book and even some
pictures.
I performed a reset and then put my sim in the phone and it works great.
