I have been looking at some unlocked phones on Ebay but am curious, after
talking to a Cingular rep he told me about being careful about buying an
unlocked phone. Hs said it probably would work but there would probably at
sometime be some minor possibly major glitches such as internet
connectivity. I am basically interested in typical good quality voice, voice
mail and texting, not really big on games email etc. Just hoping some of you
with experience could me out with your experience.

Unlocked phones work fine. The only issues, to which the rep alluded,
are that Cingular won't help you with the phone, and that you may have
to configure it yourself for Internet access, although if you choose a
phone supported by Cingular, you should be able to have the correct
settings "pushed" to your new phone. Otherwise you can do it yourself
manually -- see FAQ below.

Dependent on how it was unlocked, the warranty may be void. If buying from
Sellularphones beware, Motorola won't honor the warranty on the phones.

I've bought lots of unlocked phones from e-bay and never had a problem with
any. Cingular whines and *****es cause they didn't get another contract out
of you and the sales reps at the stores are nastier to you than normal if
you have a question about your service.

Re: Unlocked really work?
I bought an unlocked T-Mobile phone on eBay and it works fine on Cingular
except that it won't do multimedia messaging or Internet connectivity.
That's apparently what you have heard about.
Voice calls and text messaging are OK.

It probably needs to be properly configured. See the FAQ below.

Went through that, couldn't get it done. Cingular tried very hard to push
the right settings onto it and they couldn't. Is there another way to do
it? T-Mobile's firmware does not let me set very much pertaining to the
Internet.

Samsung X495, if I remember it right, with T-Mobile firmware. My daughter
is using it right now and has it with her.

Flashing means downloading new firmware (software) into its flash memory
(flash ROM = erasable ROM).
