I have the S.E. z520a, bought brand new from Cingular ~ 2 months ago. I
    have two gripes:

    1. Side buttons cannot be reprogrammed (they just provide "Phone
Status" when pressed and not in a call).

    2. Speed dial is strange. I can call voicemail if I hold down "1", but
to dial any other speed dial I have set up, I have to hit the number
and then "Call" - seems odd. I'd like to just do one-touch dialing.

Is Cingular offering new firmware for this phone? (Phone status Config
says CLDC-1.1 if this means anything)

Would a firmware update even fix this? Is there some other workaround?

    Thanks,
    Matt

But then you when you held down, say, "5" if wouldn't be able to
    open Contacts at J-K-L.
The Sony-Ericsson web site has a large download that appears to
have to do with updating phone firmware (I haven't tried it.) But
I understand running that will not change the menu structure, which
    is what you want.
Personally, I'd be happy with either the menu/key presses described
in the manual, or a new manual that describes the actual menu.

    Re: z520a - New Firmware?

True on the multiple features. I'm programmed like a robot to want the
new phone to do what my old phone (SAnyo 8100) did and was hoping for
eht one press dialing. I'm used to the "one button to phonebook, one
button to J-K-L" ... either way.

Regarding the sony download. I tried the download, it is rather large
(30 MB!) and it only will help you change your software if you have USB
cable connection to the phone. For me, I transfer files using the IR
port, so no luck here. Maybe I should post this question over at the
    Sony Knowledge base...

    Thanks!

Last week, my wife and I got the SE z525a phones. Our old Motorola phones
had the one touch speed dialing that you are wanting. Alas, it is a two-step
process on these SE phones. BTW, if you post your query elsewhere and get a
positive reply, please post the response here. Thanks!

Response from Cingular... summary: they can't do anything about it.

    Dear Matthew,

Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Online Support.

In regards to your email inquiring about the features on the Z520a, we
would be more than happy to assist you with this matter. The side
volume keys do have pre programmed features that can not be changed, if
the phone is flipped closed then you can access both the phone status
and the appointments. If the phone is open then you can only access the
phone status. Also if you have voice commands programmed in the phone
you would access the voice dialing by pressing the side volume key and
then saying the name in which you wish you call. There is no feature
that will allow you to reprogram these buttons.
The speed dialing is set up that you press the number you wish to call
and then press the call button, Cingular has customized the phone so
that their customers only have to press and hold one to dial the voice
mail, this is a Cingular feature added to the phone. There is a Sony
Ericsson Update Service located at www.sonyericsson.com/support but
this Update Service will not change the above features. If we can be of
any more assistance please contact our Customer Service and Technical
    Support number at 1-866-766-9374.

As part of Sony Ericsson's commitment to excellent customer service, we
offer a wide variety of mobile products to suit your lifestyle. If you
require more information, or have any other questions, please visit our
website at http://www.sonyericsson.com or call us at 1-866-766-9374.

You shouldn't have waited so long. Had you decided you didn't like the
phone within the first 30 days, you could have returned it to Cingular
for full credit and gotten a phone more to your liking, either from
Cingular or from a third party.

    <snip>

Many thanks for the post from Cingular. Actually, we are already used to
pressing the desired number and then the "Call key", so this is not an
annoyance to us. I hope that you are able to cope as well...
