Sprint is running around claiming that their EV-DO network is faster
than Cingular's Edge network, duh. Their basis for that claim is that
since Cingular doesn't yet have wide deployment of UMTS or HSDPA, that
the comparison is a fair one, though if you look at the number of
covered subscribers, versus the geographic coverage, Cingular isn't
lagging Sprint by a tremendous amount.

Meanwhile, Verizon continues to outpace both Cingular and Sprint in
growth, and if the current trends continue will pass Cingular as the
carrier with the most subscribers sometime in the next few quarters.

Judging from the cities covered as listed on Cingular's web site the
difference is large, in favor of Sprint!

This is true, though Cingular went after the larger cities first, so
while in terms of number of cities Sprint has a big lead, in terms of
the number of subscribers covered Sprint's lead is less.

Cingular started all this garbage with their unsubstantiated claim about
    the number of dropped calls.

Here's the TV ad from Sprint:

Pretty stupid ad, comparing EV-DO (3G) to EDGE (2G).

It would be interesting to know how many data users left Sprint
    for Cingular.

Sorry to butt in but we'd be quite pleased to have fast wireless
connections here on the north and west Olympic Peninsula of Washington!
The high end line speed for phone lines is 28.8 on a good day. Verizon
is the only game in town.
