Last year I switched my whole family over to Cingular from T-Mobile (I
already had Cingular). Got them a family plan, I wanted to convert my
single line to a family talk plan and add them, but since I had a
Massachusetts area code and they have Virginia area codes it wasn't
possible yet, but the rep in the store mentioned they're working on a
new billing system so it will possible eventually.

It's been almost a year, is it possible yet?

When I signed up with Cingular, I told the rep I wanted two different area
code numbers and he said customer service could get that for me. Of course,
they couldn't as I was looking at two different markets.

No, but what I did was just got all the phones in one of the area codes
where my adult kids live, and use it wherever I live. Most people use cell
phones so long distance isn't an issue and all Cingular phones can call each
other without extra charge. We can all call one another without added
calling and the kids are the main people we talk to. I didn't even get a
house phone until I changed to DSL and had to do so. I never use the "local"
number house phone, always use the cell because it's easier for people to
reach me. You could consider doing the same thing.

People you phone perhaps, but lots of people I phone still use land
lines, where long distance charges are still an issue. I make it a
point to call them back so they don't get hit with such charges.

The problem with me isn't the long distance/landline thing, it's that
everybody already has my phone number and many people already have my
family member's too (these aren't new numbers, had em for a while, we
just ported them into Cingular). Switching numbers is a huge hassle,
so I'd rather not go through it.
