    A friend just did that.
At first, they thought they were on the hook for a $175 cancellation fee,
but when they actually called to cancel, they got different advice.

He will be coming back occasionally, and asked about being able to use his
old number. Instead of canceling his account, he suspended it.
He can reactivate it when he is in the US and use it, which will be cheaper
than a pay as you go plan, and he didn't pay the cancellation fee.

In Sydney, he picked up a "bring your own phone" account, buying into a
plan that provides a SIM card and no phone.

Before you go, call Cingular and tell them that you will be staying in
Australia for a while, and want the subsidy unlock code so that you can use
    an Australian SIM.
