The V3 doesn't EDGE for Cingular, although Verizon has EVDO high speeds for
their V3. That should limit you to something around 30-40Kbits/sec wiht
Cingular. 5KB would be at the top end of that range.

    Motorola Razr V3, v3i, v3r: GPRS, Class 10
    No EDGE.

Your replacement phone probably has pretty current firmware, but you
could easily check (in Phone Status) to be sure.

That's about the best GPRS speed, which is all the original RAZR can do.
For faster speed you need an EGPRS(EDGE) capable phone (e.g., V557,
    V360, new KRZR K1).

I can use my 2125 to access the Internet. Is that accessing WAP sites?

It works quite well, pretty fast.

OK, then you should be able to use it for tethering, by selecting the
same profile the phone uses for WAP.

    Under "Phone Status", I've got:

    Flex Version: GSMV3MYCIN01NA0F5

    S/W Version: R374_G_0E.41.C3R_B

    DSP S/W Version: 62342400

I've tried connecting through the WAP.CINGULAR profile, ISP.CINGULAR
profile, as well as the ISPDA profile, which I'm on now (and for some
reason seems to be more reliable and my connections don't time out),
but I don't get my calls coming through.

You may want to Google for later versions.

I've already suggested everything I can think of.

Re: MediaNet service with data card?

So the 5KB/Sec download speeds are getting old. I guess by the end of
the month, I'll cancel MEdia Net unlimited and get the Laptop Connect
    or Data Connect package.

If I get my own data card for my notebook, the only thing they would
have to do is supply me with a new SIM card for it...and I could have
unlimited laptop connect for either $39.99 or $59.99 right? What would
my typical download speeds be if I had such a service instead of the
MEdia Net work around? I'm wanting to stream music and video on
occasion, which is somewhat of a limitation on this right now.

On another note, I've been thinking about upgrading to a Smartphone.
Would I need no additional data package if I had the laptop connect
    feature enabled?

The change from GPRS to EGPRS isn't going to be all that exciting.
Instead of 5KBpS, you might get 15KBpS. It's faster, but it's still not
    DSL.

Your old SIM will work fine in a data card. Why not just get a data
card and use your existing SIM with MEdia Net Unlimited?

You only get a new SIM in addition to your old SIM with new service. Is
that what you have in mind?

    >and I could have
    >unlimited laptop connect for either $39.99 or $59.99 right?

    $59.99

    >What would
    >my typical download speeds be if I had such a service instead of the
    >MEdia Net work around?

Same speeds with the same type device in the same signal area, although
Data Acceleration (compression) can speed up certain things (like
graphics). The main advantage of a typical data card over your RAZR is
that the RAZR is only GPRS, and a typical EGPRS(EDGE) data card is on
the order of 3x as fast as a RAZR with the same signal. UNTS/HSDPA (if
available in your area) is much faster yet.

    That would be enough.

I mis-answered on the last post. It's not MEdiaNet verses Laptop connect
that causes the lower speed. It's the GPRS of a V3 verses the EGPRS of a
laptop card. The Laptop card will run about 140-180Kbps with either laptop
    connect or MEdiaNet.

You should use perfmon or some other tool to watch what the data rate is
on a LAN connection while you are streaming video.

you might even be able to select a 150Kbps link for the streaming link, and
see if that might be sufficient.

True, but I personally find the difference night and day, and EGPRS
    quite usable for most things.

Re: MediaNet service with data card?

I guess my solution would be to pickup a data card off of eBay and sign
up for an additional line of service so I have a seperate SIM. I don't
like the idea of missing calls and text messages on my Razr when it's
connected, which is also a limitation of my speed because its a GPRS
    device.

So, the data card switch would increase the speed no matter if I'm
using MEdia Net, Laptop Connect, or Data Connect. Simply because it's
an EDGE device. I guess I'm understanding that much.

This is a small town. I don't think that we have UTMS coverage here.
Maybe in the next town over. But even if so, I would experience that
upgrade in service with the MEdia Net package?

With decent software (e.g., Sony Ericsson Wireless Manager) while a
    GPRS/EGPRS(EDGE) connection is active:
    * Text messages get received, are readable, and can be sent
    * Incoming call ring through, and you can see the number of the caller
    * Voice mail indicator works

    Correct.

If you have EGPRS(EDGE). You probably do, but you might want to check
the EGPRS coverage map -- see the FAQ below.

A cheaper solution than a separate data plan might be a cheap prepaid
phone. Set your regular phone to call forward "when unavailable" to the
prepaid so when your using your main line for data, calls will roll to
    the prepaid.

That's got to be cheaper than the $59.99/month the data card's separate
    plan will cost...

I agree that the EGPRS is quite sufficient for my needs on the road, but it
sounds like the OP expects a DSL replacement. I haven't tried streaming
video. I wouldn't want to substitue an EGPRS card for my 10M/1M cable.
