Since it's a very short trip and you mentioned you do not plan on using
it much, you might as well just roam with your cingular sim. You have
to make sure roaming is enabled on your account though. "Very Low"
usage obviously varies from one person to another. Be warned though,
roaming charges do add up quickly! I believe cingular charges
$1.39/min. Not only that, calls that roam to VM while you are roaming
will be charged twice.

Re: european use
Be very, very, very careful!! I roamed in Germany, Porutgal, Romania,
Greece and the Middle East(never drunken dial, while roaming overseas). I
knew the rates and planned ahead, but was still caught off guard! After 3
months in Europe and the Middle East, it was one doozey of a cell phone
bill!! Too bad Cingular/ATTWS didnt award frequent flyer miles for cell
phone use, I could probably have gotten a round the world trip!
Be careful also because the roaming rate is sometimes based on the carrier
handling your call. I have seen in Germany, where there are 4 carriers that
you can chose from. Potentially you could get a better rate using different
carriers(at least with T-Mobile). To do this you have to know how to fiddle
with the NETWORK settings menu on your phone(it should be in the user
manual). If you want to get coverage information you can look around
Cingular's website or go to WWW.GSM.ORG, this site has alot of information
on GSM.
Enjoy trip, but above all remember the roaming charges, taxes, and
surcharges add up quickly. Also warn people calling you from home that an
additional charge may be added to there phone bill for calling you on your
mobile phone.

I agree, I have my cingy phone as well as an unlocked nokia 6270, I'd
probably keep the cingy phone on in case my parents need to contact me in an
emergency, my dad is 89, don't want to stress my mom out if there's a
problem, and get a local sim for the unlocked phone. The few bux it would
cost me to recieve a call from the states to europe would well be worth the
headaches saved. I doubt it would be needed, but one never knows. BTW they
are both Quad band gsm.
