Hmmmmm.. When I purchased this phone I was under the impression that I
could use it the same as my V551, which was quad band and which I took
to Europe. Which band is missing and is it likely to be one that is
    used in Europe?

    Thanks

My v3xx uses the same SIM as the v551 and v220.
I am going to return it, though, probably in favor of a Krzr, because the
cellular sensitivity is poor by comparison to my v551, and I am being told
that the Krzr is better than the v551.

You might want to try a different phone before giving up on the V3xx --
my own V3xx has significantly better reception than any of several
V551's I've compared it to, both on voice and on data.

I went to a Nokia 6126, which is noticeably better than the V3xx.
Are you suggesting that the V3xx has poor quality control, and I should
just order a case and pick the one I like?

No, I'm suggesting that it's possible to get a bad sample with any model
of any brand, and that it makes sense to check that before assuming the
model has some sort of general defect, especially when others aren't
seeing your problem. I've gotten bad samples of pretty much all brands.
