I have been successful in getting both USB & Bluetooth tethering to work
    with my 2125 & a notebook running XP SP2. I have a different notebook
running vista & in spite of repeated efforts have not been successful in
getting tethering to work with either USB or Bluetooth (at this point I'd be
    thrilled with either option working).

Has anyone been able to set this up successfully? Many thanks for any help.

There's no real difference between XP and Vista in this area. Check
both carefully to see what's isn't the same.

I agree with you, in theory there really is nothing different in this
area that should prevent the 2125 from working with Vista but the
    reality is quite different.
The error I get from Vista is that it can't connect to the modem
though I am able to sync with Sync Center & transfer files (music &
pictures) between the notebook & my phone. My wife just purchased a
Samsung Blackjack & I was successful in getting that to work as a
modem with my Vista notebook but that came with a DVD of driver's so
maybe it is a driver problem. And trust me I have scoured the
internet for any Vista compatible driver's for this phone type but it
still hasn't helped. Is there anyone out there who has this
    configuration working?

More accurately, your outcome is quite different. XP and Vista have
essentially the same Dial-Up Networking (which is how tethering is
    performed).

    >The error I get from Vista is that it can't connect to the modem

What is the _exact_ error? What is the _exact_ name of the modem entry
in Device Manager? Have you checked the modem log to see _exactly_
    what's happening? Post it here.

    >though I am able to sync with Sync Center & transfer files (music &

How? OBEX, Windows Explorer, phone software?

    >My wife just purchased a

That's possible, but unlikely, since you are able to transfer.

What Bluetooth stack are you running, Windows or 3rd party? Do you see
a Bluetooth modem? Does it pass Diagnostics?

Do you see a USB modem? Does it pass Diagnostics?

Many questions because you didn't provide many details. It's much
easier to help when you don't keep things secret.

Not on recent versions of Windows Mobile. WM5 AKU3 and WM6 have
eliminated Bluetooth DUN in favor of Bluetooth PAN. In simple terms,
newer WM devices now act as network cards instead of dial-up modems.

I don't know what version of WM5 the 2125 is running- if it has a "Modem
Link" program installed, it uses DUN, if it has an "Internet Sharing"
    program in uses PAN.

If he has the "Modem Link" program, (meaning the device is running WM5
AKU2 or older) he must run it before connecting via DUN (else the device
will assume the PC is trying to sync with it rather than connect to the
net through it.) To connect via USB rather than BT he'll also need a USB
modem driver from his device's CD. (Called something like USBModem.inf,
    IIRC.)

If it has Internet Sharing (WM5 AKU3 or later) he runs that program
first, then connects the PC, which should recognize the device as a
network access point and be connected immediately.

Not necessarily- synching and file transfer drivers for WinMo phones are
included in the WMDC desktop software automatically downloaded by Vista,
but the DUN drivers come from the device OEM, so it's entirely possible
one can sync but not DUN if they never loaded the software on the
device's included CD. (Especially with Vista, since the CD software
generally only includes the XP sync software, most Vista users have no
need for the CD until they need DUN!)

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll try to answer all the questions
    that have been listed.

    1. I have the Modem Link application & not Internet Sharing so I think
the conclusion is that I don't have AKU3 installed. But to the best
of my knowledge this is the latest download from HTC for this phone:
    http://www.htcwiki.com/page/Software+Upgrade
    http://www.htcwiki.com/page/Use+My+2125+as+a+Modem
    2. The exact process I try to follow to get connected & the error I
    get is:

    - Start the Modem Link application on my phone , using USB connection.
    - Physically connect the phone to my Vista notebook via USB cable.
    - Notebook recognizes that the phone is connected and enables the
    modem.
    - Modem is listed as HTC USB Modem in Device Manager.
    - When I go to the Network Connections screen I can see that the
device is listed in the dial-up section.
    - I double-click the modem & it appears to start by showing a window
    displaying: Modems connecting.
    - However this eventually times-out & returns: Error 638. The remote
server is not responding in a timely fashion.
    - Here are the contents of the Modem Log:

See below for successful USB connection with Motorola RAZR V3xx on
Windows XP to AT&T/Cingular MEdia. The difference in your case is that
no dialing occurred, suggesting you either don't have a dial string
configured, or something else is not set correctly in your DUN
    connectoid. Re-check carefully.

Probably- HTC rarely issues updates once a phone is discontinued.

Is the computer actually dialing? Generally you need to dial the "dummy"
    GPRS connection number *99#.

You said the Blackjack works- does it use Modem Link or Internet Sharing?
(If it uses Modem Link, try copying it's settings!)

I'm stumped then, sorry. I assume you've checked the obvious like
unchecking any "wait for dial tone" boxes in the setup...

Yea, I have. Thanks very much for your efforts John. May just have
to use the crowbar to pry open the wallet & spring for a phone upgrade.

No. I _never_ use a pre-SP1 Microsloth OS!

Hi I know this is an old thread, but did you ever solve the problem?

I have exactly the same issue, and have tried it with two different
    modems on Vista Business.
A friend has exactly the same setup as me and his works fine.

My conclusion is that there is a setting on Vista somewhere which I am
    missing.
