I will have to be spending a lot of time in N.E. Georgia mountains
(Blairsville) and my T-Mobile doesn't connect in that area. A friend
is putting me on his Cingular plan but said I have to get my own phone
( its an extra unused number he was paying for anyways). I was
thinking about a re-furbed V551. They seem to be running around $85.00
    (inc shipping).

Is the V551 a good phone. Is that a fair price?

any help or advice is appreciated

    Thanx
    Bruce

    I wouldn't go that far ;-(

I had a V551 for two years. It's a decent phone, with good reception in my
marginal signal area. I wouldn't buy a new one though.
If someone is adding you to an existing plan, can't you get a free phone
from Cingular? They are offering the Nokia 6126 for $0 right now.
If he already has the number, look at "upgrading", and then select
"equipment only", instead of a new plan.

That's my new phone, and it is more sensitive than the V551. Not leaps and
    bounds, but a little.

A friend with T-Mobile is roaming onto Cingular at my house, so I'm not
sure if Cingular is going to be any better for you.

Why not just get your T-Mo phone unlocked and use it with your friends
Cingular SIM? T-Mo customer service will give the unlock code to any
    customer in good standing.

Did that today, or at least I called them & they're gonna send it via
e-mail in 3-10 days. I still want a better phone (for under $100
including shipping) than the nokia 6010; it gets lousy reception in
    too many places.

I can't get a replacement phone for that # cause he's already got one
on that # and is using it on HIS #.
    ..

PS : the v551 was sold before I got it
