Although a bit large, the 8525 is a touchscreen Windows Mobile PPC phone
    with a slideout QWERTY keyboard. It's a WM5 phone with a WM6 upgrade
being tested by AT&T for later release.

It will likely be replaced by the HTC Kaiser (don't know what AT&T will
call it- I'm guessing the "8925") in a few months which adds a bult-in
    GPS module.

Not anymore, AFAIK. They used tocall it "wireless web" and offer that
avbility for $3.99/month (plus minutes use
) but I don't think they offer it anymore except to customers who already
    have it on their accounts.

No. I won't bore you with the technical details, but no digit l phone
really has a "modem" in it- they just have the ability to move data
packets to/from the cell carrier (called "Circuit Switch Data" or CSD.)
The carrier uses modems at their "HQ" to connect your phone to the
    outside world.

T-Mobile still allows this, but AFAIK, AT&T no longer does. (The same
$3.99 "wireless web" service allowed you to connect to your own ISP, if
    desired, instead of Cingular.)

FWIW, GSM CSD was 9.6k rather than the 14.4 of CDMA and TDMA.

Yes, for on-PDA use only- you can't use the phone as a modem to tether
    your laptop or PC.

    > Thanks for any advice..

Good luck! Call them and ask if "CSD" or "wireless web" is still
available. It comes in handy occasionally, and is an ok "poor man's"
substitute for a data plan if e-mail is the main desire. (Web browsing
anything other than simple WAP/mobile sites is painful at 9.6k however!)

    Thanks for the great reply..

So i guess Att charges you a fee if you want to use your phone as a
modem and "tether" to a laptop.. or maybe unless you unlock or get an
unlocked phone.. which I've done before

I contacted ATT about the $3.99 plan.. they didnt "see" any info on
    that plan.. oh well...

I guess for now I'll stick with Verizon and their #7772 Unless my
work offers the data plan for free in their deal.

    Thanks again
