Google maps on the iPhone are fast, and of course, never lock up.

They're also, essentially, static, though. As opposed to the dynamic
moving maps you'd encounter in a GPS nav situation.

I never had any lockups with GMM on my WinMo phone using 1.x, but I haven't
done any navigation with 2.0, so I can't agree or disagree with the lockup
issue- I ditched GMM in favor of WLS long ago.

FWIW, the google maps application (not the web site) on my 8925 Tilt
does update dynamically with my on board GPS.

    Pretty slick.

Yeah, I as referring to the version on the iPhone.

GMM is a good app, but since you have a WinMo phone, you should really try
    Windows Live Search (wls.live.com)

It has a speech recognition function allowing you to say, for example,
"Hyatt Hotel" to find the closest Hyatt- very convenient if you're forced
    to navigate while driving.

The gas prices and movie listings functions come in handy as well.

Compared to GoogleMaps for the iPhone, the only thing this has going for
it would be VR. Clunky display, small map...
But if you are stuck with MS, this is probably a good option.

Yeah, that, and GPS support, and turn-by-turn directions, residential
    listings, save-to-contacts listings, gas prices

That's sort of the point- with WM you're not stuck- you can use Google,
WLS, Tom Tom, iGuidance, Delorme, etc.

I just installed it. I think it will be great to use. I couldn't get it to
recognize "my location", which may related to it being a beta version. The
    mapping componet seems quite excellent.

Too much button pushing for all that. Gas prices? LOL

I use a local gas prices website that's quite up-to-date and accurate.

Probably an older phone issue -- GMM was slow and unstable on my old
Moto V551, but is solid and fast on my Moto V3xx.

    Because ... ?
I've tried the Windows Live Search browser interface at m.live.com, and
I personally prefer the results from Google, including GMM, GMail
Mobile, browser interface, and Opera for the full web version.

I use Superpages Mobile, which does a better job for me than anything
    else I've tried.

Yes, but the notion of extra effort (and driving) to save a couple cents
a gallon (and that's really what it comes down to), is laughable.
Just avoid gas stations by freeways or in the higher rent areas of town,
and it's all a wash. We ll know the more expensive brands- it's your
    choice to buy there.

I don't do extra driving -- I just plan my routes and purchases
    accordingly.

Knowing when I happen to be near a cheap gas station is much better than
waiting until I'm low and the choices are few.

Knowing that cheaper gas is 2 blocks away is much better than just
settling for what I can see.

And the difference can be much more than a couple of cents --
differences of 25 cents or more are common in this area.

Which is hardly the same thing as an interactive native (or Java)
application- just as GMM is preferable to Mapquest's WAP interface. The
addition of movie listings/showtimes and gas prices are not only handy, but
sort of a preview of the usefulness of LBS and shades of things to come.

    > and
    > I personally prefer the results from Google, including GMM, GMail

WLS (the app) is currently only available for WinMo and RIM devices. (They
apparently took down the Java version awhile ago.)

WLS is better, (on the supported devices) IMO, because of the integration
with the rest of the phone- i.e. saving a business/residential lookup to
Outlook Contacts is one tap. Aerial maps include superimposed street
names, which GMM 1.x didn't (I honestly didn't check if that changed in
    2.0.)

    > >Neat (undocumented?) WinLive Search tip of the day: you can do reverse

Which is fine, but with WLS, it means not changing apps, or manually re-
entering anything, if you're navigating- you can do the lookup search from
within the app then select "Directions To Here" and navigate.

Again, GMM is a fine app, but WLS' integration with other WinMo apps makes
    it preferable to me.

As I've said before, the constant oneupsmanship between GMM and WLS
    improves both apps for consumers.
