Google Maps for Mobile 2.0.1 is a significant overhaul of the user
interface that make the program easier to use (once you get used to the
changes), including a directions list (in addition to turn by turn
    directions).

Free (other than data charges) download to your cell phone

A cooler solution is to run Google Maps or Google Earth on your
mainframe, then use rdesktop to see and control it from your tablet,
like I'm doing sending this message with Xnews by rdesktop remote at
    a diner....(c

Unfortunately, 1.2.0.9 is the latest version available for the Treo.

Except if you're trying to use Google Maps Mobile for GPS navigation. I
already know where my desktop is!

Scroll down to the "lips" function.

I have been extremely disappointed in Google mobile maps.
map updates are very slow - and prone to lock up.

MS Live on the other hand is fast and never locks-up.

I think Google (may) be good someday, but still needs work.

I haven't used Google seriously in awhile- I loaded 2.0 to check out the
cellular location feature (cute) but for day-to-day use, Windows Live
Search is the far better app.

    > MS Live on the other hand is fast and never locks-up.

It's absolutely amazing on a WinMo device- even the new speech recognition
    feature works quite well.

    > I think Google (may) be good someday, but still needs work.

Both work well, IMO, and the fact that Google and MS continually try to one-
up the other in features make them both constantly improve. I can't
remember the last time I used a "real" (offline) GPS app on my WinMo phone-
WLS works well enough I (almost) don't miss spoken directions.

Neat (undocumented?) WinLive Search tip of the day: you can do reverse
phone lookups. Just enter a number in (xxx) yyy-zzzz or xxx-yyy-zzzz
format in the search bar and search. It works for both residential or
    business listings.

Where does one download Windows Live for a pedestrian cellphone like my
    Nokia 6126?

Google Maps runs nicely on my phone. I don't know that I've ever had it
lock up, but I'm always interested in alternatives.

wls.live.com from your phone browser should autodetect the phone and offer
up the Java version. However, some of the newer features, like speech
recognition and gas prices (sorts the closest 25 gas stations by lowest
price of regular unleaded,) aren't available on all versions. (My WinMo 6
device got them, but my older 2003 version didn't.) Still a nice program
    though, either way.

Choice is good! Both are good programs with quite different UIs, so I
suspect that personal preference will be the deciding factor for many.

Nope. Nothing for my phone, there. It seesm to be a windows-centric
service, with a nod to Blackberry.

I downloaded the "generic" Java version a few months ago, just to see how
it compared to the native WinMo version. I just checked on my Nokia 3650,
    and you're right- it's gone.

Sorry to get your hopes up!

Sort of on the same line of thought... Do you know where "live.com" gets
its WiFi "locate me" information? I have visited a couple of hotspots
whose WiFi gives a good "location", and others that show the location of
    their ISP.
