Check it out: http://people.ku.edu/~cinema/wireless/regions.html
We currently have 4 regions completely online (northeast, great lakes,
northwest, and southwest) and 1 region partially online (west). The
remaining 4 regions (great plains, southeast, deep south, and midwest)
will come online over the next few months as time permits.
Comments and corrections are very welcome, just e-mail me.
Thanks to Andrew Shepherd for his generous and ongoing help and
support with this project.

Re: new cellular license maps available
Thank you very much for the maps. All we need now is for someone to
steal the REAL coverage maps from the vaults on all of them and post
them to a website out of the country, somewhere out of reach of the
company lawyers....(c;

I agree, the maps are really cool!
Larry, you mean you think we as customers have some kind of right to
know where our phones will and will not work?
That would take all the fun out of it! Imagine, we might be able to get
by with only 1 phone! =)

Those maps are great. I'd also like to see for each carrier what
technology they use (TDMA, CDMA, GSM)

Re: new cellular license maps available
Many times on the Verizon newsgroup I have advocated FCC start doing
its job of REGULATION and ENFORCEMENT of the public airwaves. Each of
their licensees should be required to use the SAME, COMPATIBLE
modulation scheme (like AMPS was forced on them to get a license in
the first place)....then, force them to either provide a STANDARD of
PERFORMANCE across their entire licensed area.....or......force them
all to share resources (as they are compatible, not proprietary) by
using each others systems until they can provide the service,
themselves. Having to pay other carriers for use of their towers,
where we are short of presence, and those $10K/day/occurance FCC
enforcement Notices of Liability of Rules Violations just MIGHT get
them more interested in erecting enough infrastructure to keep out of
jail.....BEFORE we blow the revenue on cameras and internet and games
and other nonsense not listed in their licenses. Those that refuse to
comply would face revocation or non-renewal of licenses so others, who
would be more cooperative, would comply.
Just like broadcasters constantly face....the Proof of Performance
Tests.....(c;

pockets to work the politicians and you don't, so dream on. MB

This makes way too much sense, and will never work for the same reason.

That's called the free market. It works. Regulation doesn't. Consumers are
getting what they want, which clearly seems to be (1) low price and (2) sexy
features. If performance really mattered to consumers, then we'd undoubtedly
see better performance, and higher prices to match.

Re: new cellular license maps available
Pricing is interesting.
Currently you can get the most anytime minutes for the buck on AT&T and
T-Mobile national plans. Sprint's plans are now priced noticably
higher than the competition. HOWEVER if you want a one-rate type plan,
with unlimited data, Sprint would be by far the best choice.
With Sprints heavy corporate advertising it makes you wonder if they are
attempting to position themselves towards the business user.
AT&T meanwhile, once the darling of the business world, is now
advertising heavily to the younger crowd, and Verizon just keeps doing
their own thing, which seems to be working ok for them.

No, you are not asking the FCC do do it's job. You are
defining an entirely NEW job set for the the FCC. But
while you are at it, why not add a regulation that all
carriers must offer at least one phone that performs at
the maximum FCC allowed emission level, and allow any or
all customers to activate any phone that will run on their
respective network?
