The last rumor for unbarring the DC/Balto GSM-850 network was 7
September 2003. It's not up ... any word on how far it slipped?

Sure thought I had CCCH (GSM on the field test screens) part of the time
I came down I-270, around I-495 and up Leesburg Pike and over Baron
Cameron RD to Reston and back three weks ago.

The network has been in place for a while, but not open to consumers.
You probably saw it on your field test screen, but could you register
on Cingular and use the network?

Made and received calls while on GSM. With this phone, if I have a
    signal it is usable.

Interesting. They must be moving from north to south, or only turning
on for short periods at a time. Haven't seen anything in downtown DC
    yet.

In talking with the local Cingular rep in the mall (Northern VA), the turn
on is expected Monday 15 Sept. He also implied 14 new phones very soon and
another 6 before the end of the year. No details offered other than to say
he was excited about the activity.

On Saturday, Sep 13, Cingular was running radio ads in DC that ALL phones
were now free. Must be clearing out the TDMA stock.

Guess the key word is "expected." Don't see anything today (tried
Arlington, Rosslyn, downtown DC, Bethesda). Either that or my 850/1900
    phone isn't doing 850 :-(

Monday October 6th, I've heard. Most Cingular dealers should already
have the new phones in stock. They also have the brochures in now.
DC/Balto will be almost identical to Philly with respect to phones and
    price plans (National).

Sure enough I have a signal this morning. Will have to play around to
see how the coverage is and if in-building penetration is better than
    the 1900MHz...

I've done a bit more playing and have found:

    - I can make calls, but not receive them. Inbound calls get a funky
    "you've misdialed" recording.
    - GPRS doesn't work. The WAP APN gets a connection and burns bytes,
but the phone's browser (moto t720) doesn't launch. The external APN
    never connects.
    - Coverage is pretty good, except in my windowless basement office (of
course). My phone still grabs T-Mo upon seeing daylight, but quickly
    switches over to "Cingular Wireless".
    - My home market is 310-150 (Cingular Carolinas), so the phone
indicates roaming on the DC network (310-410).

I'll give it another day or so before calling customer disservice.

    Re: DC/Balto GSM turn-on date?

I'm in Essex, MD, just east of Baltimore City, and had a GSM signal
to/from work, near BWI airport. It seemed to work well. I can't tell you
anything about GPRS, as the Nokia 6340i doesn't have it.
The audio level appears to be greater than when I was using TDMA.

I have gotten excellent phone coverage in Harford County (Samsung
SGH-307), have not had any trouble receiving calls, ... only problem
appears to be GPRS. Worked yesterday afternoon long enough to download
a graphic. Hasn't worked since. CS is poorly educated on Wireless
    Internet when you call.
I did pick up extend on I-95. I wonder if I'll get billed for roaming?
