It looks like cingular gsm is up and running here in dallas.
There have been other posts indicating as such.

FYI, Cingular GSM went live (unbarred) in DFW on 10/1. My 6340i bounced
between GSM and TDMA for the first couple of days but for the last
several days has been solid GSM. An unexpected surprise--it's
consistently showing 2-3 bars more signal strength than TDMA in most
places I've been. So far no problems at all on my end.
Perhaps the late Oct or Nov date is when they'll introduce new GSM-only
plans and phones?

Re: Cingular GSM Dallas Question
Cingular has been promising a complete roll out in Dallas and Fort Worth
before Christmas. I've heard some comments about Houston as well. But
there has been no word about the rural areas.

Re: Cingular GSM Dallas Question
The Houston Cingular web page has been selling only GSM and GAIT phones for
some time now.

Rural areas? Cingular itself doesn't HAVE many rural areas in Texas--
mainly just on the outskirts of large cities. Most rural areas are
served by partners whose conversion from AMPS/TDMA to GSM will take
significant time--if it happens at all.
Since 10/1 I've been seeing unbarred Cingular GSM all over DFW including
some rural area north of the metroplex. My guess is that they converted
ALL their towers but I'll know more today since I'm heading out of town
to the south where they gradually switch to fewer/taller towers.
Cingular reaches about 50 miles south--I loose TDMA just south of Glen
Rose and AMPS about 20 miles further where I start roaming on Cellular
One or MidTex. My bet is that I'll see GSM where I saw TDMA before
but...
Oops. Unless GSM can't USE those taller/high power rural towers to
reach the same area that TDMA was covering. Is GSM limited to low power
only? To short towers only? Anybody know? Of course Cingular could
have started building more rural towers a year ago...

Re: Cingular GSM Dallas Question
If you go to field test mode, you'll find that for consistent signal
levels, GSM will show more signal bars.
-93 GSM 3-4 bars TDMA 1-2 bars.
*3001#12345# creates menu 12 field test. Select field test enter 0000
to return to regular mode. Select field test enter 0101 thru 0113 for
GSM(CCCH) and 2101 thru 2109 for TDMA(DCCH)/Amps(ACCH). Holding * down
for 2 seconds brings up cryptic explanations for readings. Hold * down
for 2 seconds to return to field test mode.

Re: Cingular GSM Dallas Question
Except for the area on I-10 east of where I-20 splits for about 60-70
miles I had a Cingular signal. Must have been based E and W of Ft.
Stockton (8500).

Re: Cingular GSM Dallas Question
Cingular has turned up their GSM network... I cannot remember the exact
date but it was about a week 1/2 ago. So if you are in the DFW area on
a phone capable of running on GSM, you are using Cingulars towers.

Update from trip. As far as I could tell GSM covered the EXACT same
area as was covered by TDMA. I saw strong GSM along 67 from Midlothian
to Alvarado to Cleburne to Glen Rose -- if anything it may have made it
a few miles further south than before. On the way back thru the same
area I had a strong GSM signal from Whitney north to Blum and Grandview.
The only towers I saw in those rural areas were the old tall/high power
towers so GSM must be able to use them okay. So far I haven't seen any
HOLES in the GSM coverage so unless someone knows otherwise I'd say it
was a 100% rollout.
