Yes, you are thinking right! I have had the Nokia 6340i since April
2003, and I am able to get cell phone service virtually anywhere there is
service. I highly recommend it!
I myself would not recommend a GSM only phone, as there are large holes
in GSM coverage. The Baltimore/Washington area (where I live) just turned on
(unbarred) GSM on 10/6/2003. I like GSM myself, but as of now, it's not good
while traveling, especially in rural areas, IMHO.
Have a good one,
Mark A. Smith

Re: Phone upgrade
100% right, I had a TDMA/AMPS phone and bought a 6340i last Dec. and get
coverage just about everywhere in the US in my 18-wheeler truck. I was
home in Detroit a couple of weeks ago when the Cingular 850 GSM networks
down nationwide. As I passed a Cingular tower, I noticed that the phone
went to ATT Wireless GSM. No loss of service at all. You'll get lots
of GSM, TDMA and AMPS around the country. Mostly GSM in medium to large
cities and now along Interstates by ATTWS and Cingular. Some T-Mobile
where ATTWS is not resident and lots of other carriers-Einstein PCS in
WI, Iowa Wireless through IA, etc.

Phone upgrade
I am thinking of upgrading my phone from my current 3360. I notice that all
of the new "more cutting edge" phones in the show room do not list service
with Amps or TDMA systems. Only GSM/GPRS.
I am thinking that I should obtain a GAIT phone such as the 6340i while I
can to retain the widest possible coverage with my Nation plan. Am I
thinking right?

Re: Phone upgrade
Go for it. You'll like the results. I use the T62U, either phone will
serve you well.

Re: Phone upgrade
Look at Cingular's GSM coverage map for the nation. It's almost
pathetic. Also, remember when GSM went down for the weekend a couple of
weekends ago? All the folks with the "cutting edge" phones couldn't do no
cuttin!
