There is only one way for you to get SPAM on your cell phone- if your
number was sold to a telemarketer. There is no way for SPAM to sent to
your cell phone without this happening first. Getting SPAM on your
Internet e-mail is one thing, but getting it on your text messenger
means that they got your cell phone number.
Some folks cry that it isn't legal- there are enormous loop-holes. In
the next hour or two many of you will have already heard some of this on
the national news. Some of you have just finished hearing about it
    before this post was written.

411 will make this happen even more so. From what I have seen a lot of
folks do not like the idea of their phone numbers being made public for
the reasons stated below. The problem is that this is already
happening. The 411 concept will make it easier for everyone to make
money off your cell phone. SPAM has just begun.

I don't understand. Why couldn't I just start emailing my filth and
    perversions to:

    [email protected]

    or

    [email protected]

    ?

    Wouldn't that be another way?

No doubt. Yet, this is where I find it difficult to understand the
logic behind a cell company selling their very soul for a few bucks. If
this pans out as you suggest, I can't even imagine the call load on CSRs
    across the globe.

They absolutely can send you SPAM without knowing your number. Just
send to every number there is (from 000-000-000 to 999-999-9999) using
all the gateways that the cell companies use. Not very efficient, but
    it would get us all!

I have been advised that the 411 issue will be broached before it is
launched. Apparently folks will have the option from the very beginning
to turn this down. And yes, I intend to say no.

Yeah, me too. Took it off all my phones (Thankfully, Cingular sent me
SMS at midnight of first day and I was clued in). I wouldn't have cared
except the contract says I gotta pay for 'em all whether I asked for 'em
    or not.

    What is the '411' concept?
