I'm a generally happy Verizon Wireless customer who's tired of waiting for
Verizon to get off its collective luddite ass and offer Bluetooth phones that
work with the Hands Free Link in my new Acura TL. So I'm planning to make the
jump to either AT&T or Cingular (or both, depending on how the acquisition deal
    plays out

My question to you is, which way would you jump? Would you go with AT&T or
Cingular? I'll most likely be picking up a T616 phone and a local/regional type
    service plan.

If it was me, and I was choosing between Cingular and AT&T, there would be
no choice. I am 100% free of SBC now that I don't live in an area where they
are the ILEC, and I would never do business with them as they are a bunch of
    thieving scumbags.

By extension, since I live in California, that also means no T-Mobile.

If I had to choose, it would be AT&T.

(Of course, I'm not impressed with them either. About a month ago I went
into their Victorville, California retail store just to check it out, and
they were out of almost all the models they normally carry.)

Depends on where you live, where you travel, what your usage pattern
is, and who'd be the better carrier based on all those criteria. You
DON'T choose the carrier based on the phone you can use on their
network. (People who do tend to become disgruntled customers.)

Well, that's the strategy I followed when choosing Verizon, and look what it got
me: a cellular provider that doesn't sell any Bluetooth phones for use on their
    system.

is that kinda like that onstar commercial where the moron calls and
says "what does the white button do?" and the lady says "for handsfree
calling" and he nearly has an orgasm on the phone cause he can push a
    button and talk?

The incumbent 800Mhz carriers are the best bet.

Either verizon and ATT, cigular, or x company.
Or X company and ATT or cingular.
Or X company and Y company.

    Go to XFF's maps.
    http://n9wos.home.att.net/cell/xff/regions.html
    And see who they are.

If that doesn't turn up anything useable, then go
    to the PCS carriers.
(ie)If you are in California, that would be cingular, or ...(on and on).

    They can be found at
    http://www.wirelessadvisor.com
Just type in your zip and it should give the companies that
is licensed to operate in your area.

Not being in that area, I don't know. Do some research and see who has the
best coverage. The T616 itself is probably cheaper with AT&T, but in my
area, cingular has considerably better coverage.

I can't understand the myopic view some people have, why not just buy the
phone you want and activate it on your current service? Why does the carrier
have to sell the phone you want so you can save a few bucks? You can't be
broke or you wouldn't be buying a new car.

Come to think of it, you can get Bluetooth receivers with a 2.5 MM jack that
plugs into any cellphone with a rechargeable wireless headset that you can
use both in the car, and outside of the car with the rechargeable wireless
headset. (in case you can't find em at a high priced store, they are even on
sale at radioshack for $129 (regular $179.99 go to http://www.radioshack.com
and type bluetooth into search criteria)

Maybe his view is a side effect of verizon's myopic(narrow minded) view.

Please read his previous post on the NG.
The choice of bluetooth capable CDMA phones is almost
    non existent.
He even went to the 270c (which is discontinued)
to try and get one, he found that it wouldn't work because
    it was too old.

    >You can't be
    > broke or you wouldn't be buying a new car.

He has already spent money on the 270, and a lot of
his time trying to get the BT stuff straitened out, so
I don't think money is that primary factor in this.
He wants a phone that will work with his car,
    Nothing more, nothing less.

But that doesn't solve his original problem.
Getting a bluetooth phone to work with his car.

Couldn't you simply get one of those headset jack to bluetooth "transmitter"
adapters that claim to allow you to "use a bluetooth headset on any phone!"
    I think CompUSA sells them.

Certainly a new phone would solve the problem, but if you're happy with your
    phone and service otherwise...

And you think anyone else is better?

You're living in a dream world.

Fact: you have to have telecom services. Fact: all telecom service
    providers are thieving scumbags.

Ergo, fact: you WILL be doing business, by definition, with thieving
    scumbags. Period.

I would see which, if either, of them currently offer 800 Mhz TDMA in your
    area.
Eventually they will convert their 800 Mhz TDMA to 800 Mhz GSM, which will
solve many of the GSM coverage problems.

In my area I'd go with AT&T.

My guess is that the AT&T phones are GSM, and AT&T's GSM service is
terrible. Cingular is actually decent in Southern California, where
    you are.

If you want to stay with Verizon, you could purchase the JABRA FreeSpeak
Bluetooth Wireless Mobile Headset. It Works with non-Bluetooth mobile
phones by using a plug-in type adapter to transmit the Bluetooth signal.

Bluetooth has been heavily debated and there has been numerous articles that
indicated Bluetooth is not long for existence. At any rate, this headset
adapter might allow you to stay with Verizon and use it in your car.

It's sold at Radio Shack as catalog #17-976
    $179.99

You might try the JABRA® FreeSpeakT BluetoothT Wireless Mobile Headset. It
works with non-BluetoothT mobile phones using the same multi-function
holder/charger used for BluetoothT phones. This adapter would allow you to
stay with Verizon and use the phone in your car. It's sold at Radio Shack
    for $179.99. Catalog #17-976
