They bought it because they wanted it. They have tried to sell it in the
past because they need the money, but nobody liked their ridiculous terms.
They aren't really "trying" to sell it, just pretending that someone might
pay a price for it similar to the price you might sell one of your
appendages for (i.e., there is technically a high enough price for the
seller, but no buyers willing to pay it).

It's true. It's also true that McDonald's is trying to buy AT&T
    Wireless.

They bought it at an artificially high price. Last year they had
worked on various deals to sell but as time went on and they saw their
income rise i think they came to relaize that their best bet would be
to hold out till they price got higher -or- just hang onto it and see
what happens. From the looks of things TMob is coming up fast and
especially with their current spectrum portfolio is in good position
to be a serious player in the months and years to come.

Western Wireless, which started Voicestream, is in financial trouble.
Most of Western's revenue comes from Cingular and AT&T customers.
Western needed money, and DT came along and purchased Voicestream, the
"ailing" division of Western. Now, Western is building a GSM 850 and a
GSM 1900 overlay exclusively for roamers of Cingular, AT&T, and
T-Mobile. Western Wireless currently runs AMPS 800, TDMA 800, CDMA 800,
GSM 850, TDMA 1900, CDMA 1900, and GSM 1900. In some periods, the vast
majority of Western's revenue is from roamers (beating equipment sales
and subscriptions of its own customers, but it does seem to receive a
    lot of ETFs).

....while converting CellularONE to CDMA. Western Wireless owns the CellularONE
name, and while C1 franchises NOT owned by them aren't going to CDMA (Dobson
CellularONE is going GSM, for example), their own C1 markets are going CDMA.
    Or have already.

    It's an interesting business model.

I believe they're getting rid of the TDMA in favor of CDMA.

so does Cingular, soon to buy the AT&T Wireless assets and customer
    lists.

.... That'd be one way to get the real estate to expand the GSM network --
put a mini-cell in every McD's in the country. Failing that, they could
just put a CDMA jammer in them.

I believe they would get better coverage if the installed them in all the

Not just California. There are too many Starbuckses to count right here in
my town in the Chicago suburbs.

    1. I think McD's wants to stick to (mostly) legal business models.

    2. Wasn't CDMA a military invention meant to be *resistant* to jamming?

Pretty much. Jamming is just noise to a CDMA receiver, and it's
designed to operate in the presence of noise (the other CDMA phones on
    the channel are also noise).
