Did anyone check out RIMM today? Research in Motion (the company that
makes these dumb Blackberrys that's not quite a pager, or not quite a
phone, certainly not as cool/functional/handy as a camera phone,
smartphone, HandSpring Treo or a Danger Hiptop) had their quarterly
earnings release and their stock shot up 51% in <<one day>>. Earlier
this year it was lounging below 11 and tonight it sits just below 70.

    Sheesh. Who knew?

Certainly didn't know or I would have bought. They're making headway in
Europe which has helped sales. Plus there are more companies selling the
blackberry, the new folks support pop3 accounts not just corporate accounts
with RIM's software. Still a limited product, at least in the US. Outside
Washington and Wall Street, how many are there?

Apparently you have consumer-focused myopia when it comes to wireless apps.
Blackberry's appeal is not how "cool" the device is, it is how well it
integrates with Exchange and Notes, and other corporate data.. Nobody
currently does it better, with more carrier options than Blackberry.

I am certainly not up to speed on the usefulness of Blackberrys in the
enterprise - I work for a company that is so "IT paranoid" that these
devices will never see the light of day at our offices.

    Rim is doing something right.

www.good.com - much better server backend than RIM, plus their software runs
on RIM, Good and Treo devices. Corporate market only, very easy to setup and
    maintain.

Aren't these the guys that were suing (or getting sued by) RIM for
    patent/software infringement?

The only non-legacy (Mobitex / Motient) network Good runs on is SPCS, and
that's a recent development. No international roaming, and very few
third-party apps integrate with Good. How do you figure the server backend
is "much better?" - what, the wireless contacts and tasks? The
"zero-footprint" desktop is about the only real advantage. If they could
sign more carriers, then maybe they would be playing the same game...

We only have RIM 957's and Good G100's in the field. The complete wireless
sync of all Outlook items is great, as is the zero-footprint (good phrase) -
which are both functions of the server backend.

Good have just released service for the Treo 600 and when this is combined
with service from ATTWS the Treo 600 will work (both voice and data) in
Europe etc. I tried to get one on trial, Good were willing to oblige, as
were ATTWS - but in the end ATTWS pathetic customer service kicked in and I
wasn't able to pickup a trial unit before I head to London. My personal
cellphone is with ATTWS and there is just no way I could recommend our
business should consider them as a service provider. Given Good already
provide their service on Cingular's Mobitex network, hopefully its a matter
of time before they sign up other carriers, as you say.

I certainly hope they do - don't get me wrong, competition is always a good
thing, and Good does some things very well. But for now, the international
roaming with T-Mo and the superior coverage for some of our regions on
Verizon make Blackberry a more complete choice.

And lost in federal court. They're out on appeal now.

Maybe so, but try to buy a device that is open and will even take their
software. How many devices have they put out and control so far?

Not bad for a company who risks being completely shut out of the US
market if their patent case appeal doesn't hold up in court (they've
lost a patent case, and the judgement injuncted them from selling
blackberrys in the US, but that injuction has been suspended pending
    appeal).
