ok my dad got me a phone for christmas, its a samsung 427. i love the
phone so far. we have a family plan that he is paying for, but any
extras i have to pay for. we all have wireless internet on the
phones, but i was wondering about the cost of it. is it worth it to
pay 3.99 or whatever for 1mb per month? and about how much "surfing"
is that? also, when i check my email, and am getting charged by the
KB, do the sizes of my emails matter? im a bit confused and any help
would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Question about wireless internet for the experts...
Under the $3.99 wireless internet plan, how much data you use is not
important because it doesn't count data usage; usage is subtracted
from your minutes.
If you have wireless internet express (WIX), then you're charged by
how much data you use. WIX is $6.99 for 1MB, which in my opinion is
highway robbery; that is, compared to T-mobile who sells unlimited web
access for $4.99!
How much surfing is 1MB? Well that depends on you and how you use it.
I downloaded 2 games today & that was a total of 180K. 1MB is 1024k.
To check my yahoo mail can take around 20-36k. That includes reading &
a short reply to a few of them. To "look only", that is, viewing the
subjects without clicking on them, is probably around 10k or less. Its
hard to say how much 1MB is; It just depends on how much you use it.

It is $6.99 for 1mb, or .5 cents per kb (pay-per-use, unless you are
referring to the CSD (dial in) $3.99/month, which only goes against minutes,
unlimited bytes

Depends on the plan you are referring to - 3.99 dial in or 6.99 WIX. For the
dial in, no, since bytes are not tracked. For the WIX, yes the size of the
email matters since bytes are all that's tracked.
However, if WIX is what you are considering (this uses the GPRS function of
the phone and does not go against minutes and also allows you to still
receive calls), I would suggest first starting with the pay per use plan,
since you are only paying $5.12 for 1MB of data, instead of the $6.99. Makes
no sense to go with the $6.99/1MB plan if you think you will be staying
around 1MB. $6.99 will get you 1398KB on the pay per use at current rates
(only good through March I think?)

CSD dial-in actually seems to be free. For me, I like to use my phone (or
at least I like the capability) to modem out. When one mail attachment can
run a half meg, 0.5 cent a kilobyte is not a reasonable option.

Also lucky enough to get the CSD free here also. Don't know why they added
me to the gateway, but no complaints <wink>. GPRS is faster, but still slow,
so I typically just dial in to CSD whenever I am accessing from phone to
avoid the WIX charges.

Does "CSD" mean "Wireless Internet" (per minute) vs "Wireless Internet
Express" (per kb)? How much of a speed difference is there? I signed up
for the promotional WIX to try it, using the phone with data cable as
a modem. It only worked on the day of purchase, never since (despite many
conversations with Cingular, usually Yet Another Proposed Solution).
Wireless Internet does work, but is horribly slow.
