It's upgrade time, and I'm torn between the SonyEricsson T610 and the
    Motorola V500.

(I know, I should be going for the T630, but I'm on Orange. *Thanks*,
Orange, will you ever get your walled garden of handsets just right?)

I was almost all set to go for the T610, but thought I'd have a last
minute scout around to check out the competition in the same price-range..

Both phones have near-identical spec, although the relative lack of
memory and less-than-perfect screen on the T610 count against it to some
extent. But it is a nice phone :-)

On the other hand, the V500 is a Motorola..
I've never had a Moto (nor an Ericsson, but have played with a friend's
T610 and found it fine), but am aware that earlier Motos were pretty
dreadful in the UI stakes and have heard the tales of woe here.
Is this one up to the job?

As far as I can see, the advantages of the Moto are:
better camera, more storage, better screen (presumably?),
quad- rather than tri- band (not particularly important to me).

Any other significant differences between the two?
(Bloody Moto site won't let me look at the appropriate pages, usual
    bogus browser-sniffing reasons)

Things which are particularly important or of interest to me:
(apart from all the other lovely toy-features ;-)

    * being able to assign multiple phone numbers to one name
    * receiving *and sending* email
    * alarm clock
    * Java capabilities (any differences in their feature sets?)
    * Web/WAP capabilities (any differences in their feature sets?)
    * infrared port

Should I toss a coin to decide? ;-)

    Thanks for any advice,

    David.

    Hi there David

I just got the V525 (exactly the same as V500) a couple days ago and it's
perfect. I have to mention though that my V525 has been seem editted to V600
software. I believe that makes all the difference, better&faster menu with
moving icons, more memory available, video player (who cares, I don't
really), better standby-time (this will always be subject to discussion so
take it with a grain of salt).

I was apprehensive about the weight and measurements of the phone. I'm not
dissapointed, it's wonderfully small and the weight is very even
proportioned. Menu is very fast indeed. I've had a couple of Motorola's in
the past and those menu's were appalling. Menu's of the V525 are pretty
logical as well, I have no issues with it. Shortcuts are easily configured.
Standby-time I can not comment on just yet. See my comments on your specific
questions above. If you need more info, just let me know and I'll try to
    answer any questions.

Oh and I got the mini-antenna. It makes the phone perfect

For just those reasons, toss a coin. My preference is the SE for a few
    reasons:

    1. The moto is a brick. Bulky like most motos are
    2. I like the SE UI much much much better.
    3. I like the bluetooth set-up better on the SE. This may not be an issue to
you though since you are looking towards IR.
    4. RF - My SE is the only GSM phone that is able to make/receive calls from
my place at the lake. It is a very weak service area there. Most others get
a voice mail indicator, but can't make/receive calls.

    Just my 2 cents.

Mmmm... Would have been very nice, but way outwith my budget as an
    upgrade, unfortunately. :-(

I think that, as with computers, there's something to be said in getting
a mobile upgrade just as the phone you want drops off the 'hot' list and
becomes affordable, rather than getting the newest and shiniest. By that
time, there'll be a lot of good user feedback and hopefully all the bugs
will have been ironed out and fixed. Whereas getting the newest of the
new can sometimes put you in the angst-ridden position of being
unofficial beta tester, I made that mistake with the Nokia 7110..

In the end, I went for the T610.

The things that clinched it in the end were that the T610 was slightly
    cheaper ( = more pennies saved towards next upgrade in due course ;-);
that, while unlikely, I /might/ at some point need to get online with
my Psion 5mx (which only has IRDA, so needing the T610's IR port); the
fact that after various websearches there seems to be a much larger
T610 "community" (developers, etc), and finally (trivially), spite for
Moto having a b0rken inaccessible website..

    Cheers,

    David.

Good choice. I've had one on Orange for a year now. Because I'm a little
careless, I am always dropping mine (usually because I bend over to tie
my shoelaces and it falls out of my shirt pocket!)

A few scratches on the outer casing aside, I'm convinced it's
    unbreakable!

I'm tempted to upgrade to a K700 this month, but I've got few complaints
with the T610- the only main one being that it can be a little difficult
to see the screen when outside. Also, when it receives a text message,
it freezes for a few seconds- that would be a software version issue
    though.

Also, presuming you're on Orange contract, do a google search
(uk.telecom.mobile) on free 0800 and calling cards. All the latest SE
phones (including the T610) support calling cards, and it could save you
    quite a bit of money.
